Nokia has revealed its Touchscreen gizmo the 5800! So far Nokia has not done great with touchscreens. Its only two releases the 7710 and the 6708 were disappointing and we assumed that Nokia – One bitten was twice shy.
Its a well accepted fact that Nokia makes some good smartphones, media phones, but the only place where it gets it wrong is the Touch!! However the 5800 looks better than what we have seen before. Here is a quick comparison of the iPhone vs Nokia 5800:

1) Design: Looks has been one of the strong point for Apple. Right from the Macs to the iPod and lately the iPhone. Apple products are a style statement. Nokia 5800 looks good, but it lacks that killer iPhone looks. This one surely goes to Apple. However the plastic body Nokia makes the 5800 lighter than the iPhone. Also we are sure that the iPhone is much more delicate than the Nokia 5800.
2) Camera: Nokia 5800 is powered by the Carl Zesis 3.2 Megapixel lens with a Dual Led Flash. While the iPhone has a 2MP cam with no flash. Though the iPhone camera gives good enough results, the Nokia beats the iPhone easily. Oops.. and did i forgot Video Recording ?? Nokia has it, iPhone doesn’t!
3) Screen and Touch: Touch functionality of the iPhone is UNIQUE. Both the 5800 and the iPhone offer a accelerometer but the Nokia still relies on offers the Stylus! This according to them will offer handwriting recognition and appeals better to global audience (specially in Asia). The iPhone screen is a little bigger at 3.5″ compared to Nokia’s 3.2″. I guess both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. TIE
4) Music: Ahuhmmm the iPod backed iPhone and the Nokia. iPod fans love the iPhone! But theres more: Nokia now has its own music download service that competes with iTunes. Gotta wait and watch how things shape up! (Both devices offer a 3.5mm headset jack)
5) Features: Apple is restrictive and the iPhone isn’t all that open. Standard functions like Copy n Paste, Sms Forwarding etc are still missing. You can delete a single SMS and getting those 3rd part apps is a pain! Nokia offers a mass storage mode and has a Mini USB connectivity, symbian has loads of softwares already, its a Nokia – so all the basics are right! Its made for the masses. The only thing is that the Mac Os powering the iPhone is made for TOUCH usage, unfortunately the Symbian isn’t! So the only complaint would be the not soo Touch oriented usage of the Symbian OS that powers the 5800.
Also Nokia 5800 has AD2P Bluetooth support and matches the iPhone with WiFi and GPS. Nokia claims much better battery life, and we believe thats a fact.
6) Memory: iPhone comes in 8GB and 16GB version. While the 5800 comes with a 8GB MicroSDHC card free, you can add a 16GB as well. Nokia has a 81MB internal memory. (and not to forget the Usb Mass Storage mode it offers). Nokia Wins here!
7) Pricing: The Nokia is CHEAPER!! It sells unlocked and gives no trouble. Apple iPhone sells for approx 800-900$ unlocked, and the contract with AT&T is too expensive. Globally the Nokia 5800 will reach you much easily, open, unlocked and would be cheaper at below $400.

Update: The Nokia 5800 is a winner for Nokia – Selling 2.8 million units in 3 months. Still being rolled out in some markets.
Update: iPhone 3G S (Video + Speed)
While many still debate that 5800 is better than the iPhone 3G, I have now went handson with the Nokia 5800 for enough time to conclusively tell you that its no where close to the iPhone in touchscreen experience and very frankly the camera quality is also just OK. With the iPhone firmware 3.0 and the new Video powers of the 3GS – 5800 can only call upon the Nokia N97 to compete with Apple (but In out opinion comparing the two phones is not a great idea). However IMO even the iPhone 3G with the OS 3 is good enough. Amazing games, apps, wider screen, better touch controls, multitouch and far far superior web experience are some of the reasons I love the iPhone over the Nokia 5800.

Um, you got one of your facts wrong there. The 5800 doesn’t “rely on the stylus”. It is designed to be navigated with fingers touching the screen just like the iPhone. The stylus (normally concealed in the body) is merely an option — an option the iPhone doesn’t have — and is more to the benefit of countries like China where handwriting recognition is so important.
Hi Walker,
Thanks for pointing out. I am expected to get my 5800 in a day or two. Shall write in more specific details then.
Have updated the part you pointed out.
I Think 5800 is better than iphone
Nice comparison. The iPhone, to me is like a “brainless blonde”. Let’s wait for the N97 though!!
Some reasons NOT to buy the 5800: http://www.lordoftheweb.info/366/reasons-not-to-buy-the-nokia-5800-xpress-music/
Please do comment on it!
1) Design : Iphone beats any touch phone by miles.
2) Camera: U shud have actually done a test instead of going by specs. I remember how my 3.2 MP E9 camera fared pretty bad to my friend’s Iphone version 1’s camera.
3) Screen Touch: Iphone has Multi Touch and its more responsive. Cant be a tie.
4) Itunes is industry leader and way ahead in functionality.
You needed to compare music quality.
5)Features: Could be tie based on what your requirements are. Iphone lacks some basic features but offers thousands on applications that can be used.
6)Memory: Nokia has expandable memory. Beat iphone
7) Price: This is where iphone loses hands on..
Nokia 5800 is an awesome piece… Feature wise it iphone is not at all a competition for Nokia 5800 [may be other than in terms of graphics]. Even in graphics, I don’t believe 5800 is far behind. I felt it is most worthy phone one can have for that price. It is best phone I have used. [It is camera is good n has very responsive touch screen.].
im going to get the nokia 5800 in a few days time n after browsing throug, have read pretty good comments for the nokia..its doing pretty well,95% say its an awesum 4ne. way to go Nokia

-Bigger qwerty keyboard
-Lighter weight (u will be suprised)
-Size, Slim, possible to use with one finger
-Mobile phone product development: 1960-2009
Iphone 3G: (evil)
-around 500€ (must buy new connections, Expensive)
-New applications, but many costs…, no possibility to make own THEMES
-Small qwerty keyboard
-Heavyer weight
-Size, Wide, often u have to use 2 fingers
-Phone product development: 2007-2009
Nokia rules now and always!!! FINNISH TECHNOLOGICAL POWER OWNS!!!!
Too bad apple..
looks like your iphone is not so good compare to the 5800
did iphone has the big qwerty keyboard mode like the one nokia 5800 has?

Something that haven’t been assessed is the web usability. iphone has a MUCH smoother user experience of web, utube, gmail interface. How about the smooth Zoom in browsing photos from iphone?
How about the level of hardware support out there for iphone and Nokia? All the iphone docking to hifi. The amount of free software written for iphone. Are these included into the comparison?
@Someone Else: Valid Points!!
Finding a Nokia service center is easy, but Apple provides much faster and better service support.
Cheers
I have purchase Nokia 5800 today but I do not how to use GPS in it. I want to use it as navigatore also. Please guide
plz guys help me choosing b/w htc touch viva and nokia 5800 XP
@ricky go for 5800 if you are a Nokia user. Its v good.
If you are a WM user, HTC is fine.
I have 5800 and it sucks. I am actualy considering an iPhone. 5800 has very slow and boring interface compared to iPhone. Very few apps and most of them are crap. Do not buy it! You’ll love it for a month max. Then you’ll hate it.
hey people, i bought 5800 2 days back.. it is multi touch too!! there are games being developed for exploiting the multi touch..
also, please!! dont compare this with the i phone!! t costs less than half of i- phone!!
Hey guys don’t forget, the 5800 might have a smaller screen (3.2″ compared to iphone’s 3.5″) but it has a far greater pixel density (640 x 360 nHD compared to iphone’s 480 x 320).
I owned a nokia N95 and I loved it because it had everything I wanted in a phone. The only thing lacking in the N95 was a touchscreen and the 5800 delivers just that making it the ideal phone for me. I just sold my N95 and am going to get a 5800 soon. I was considering the iphone but since it\’s more than double the price the 5800 won.
Till date I have used over 20 cellphones, 90 % of which was Nokia. I have always loved Nokia but when I bought 5800, my faith in Nokia completely vanished. I have been facing tremendous problem from the day one. Terribly fluctuating audio that has been fixed by the service centre of Nokia & then intermittent On Off. I never know, when this phone switches off automatically.
Nokia 5800 music express by far more better than i phone… the price, the size and the performance… never have problems with Nokia… always the best
I see good support for Nokia 5800 here, hope N97 lives up to the expectations aswell.
LG cookie and 5800 have been two commercial successes competing with the Apple iPhone 3G.
I used to heavily debate against all by the Apple Corp and I’ve stood by the PC, non-ipod MP3 players, and sim-card cell phones since the beginning of the internet.
The Apple negatives:
1. Apple products to me were more expensive than they were worth.
2. Keeps their components and software limited/closed-source.
3. Marketing strategies turn off a lot of people by the third-rate tactics.
But after testing several Apple products over the years, I realize that the iphone puts so much effort into the details it is almost worth it. The OS interfaces are also just beautiful and most of their products are put together very nicely, like a perfect work of art. The possibilites are endless. Sort of. They just have to learn to trust people with their products and let us do what we want to it (i.e. fix #2).
As with Nokia, its got Apple beat on pure muscle (specs, price, market base, smart-phone functionality). Sadly, sometimes Symbian OS leaves something to be desired (like stability). Unlike Apple, attention to detail isn’t Nokia’s strong point. Just sales.
So thats my humble opinion. Either company could come up with “ultimate” smartphone in the future, depending who’s flaw is fixed first. My guess (and hope) is Apple. But for now, it looks like Nokia 5800 still wins. (James Bond used it, so it must be bad***s)
I’ve been using the 5800 for about a month now and this is how i feel it takes on the iPhone
http://lotsoftimeonmyhands.blogspot.com/2009/05/rundown-on-5800-and-iphone.html
Over all the 5800 is a good phone, but Nokia still has to iron out a few kinks before it can totally take over the iPhone
i think 5800 is way much better than iphone. got much more than iphone. looks like iphone got a make a comeback against 5800 but for now, 5800 FOR LIFE.
Dread man, you know what phone the 5800 is, right dude? it’s not a 1500 for starters. .. If you’d ever used it I think you’d know the difference.
5800 FTW.
i realy like both N5800 and iphone 3G, they have a very nice: looks, features, etc. the only problem is that I didn’t try to have a mobile phone since birth. and I don’t want to buy also, otherwise my boss will always call me..
i think iphone is excellent but it have alot of problems …like applications and cydia and whatever
so i prefer nokia 5800 becasue it has better bluetooth camera and screen resolution

nokia kicks butt no phone can be better than the nokia5800. Keep it up nokia!!
i have a nokia 5800 and you will be surprised to know it was recomended to me by an iphone user.
i decided i wanted a touchscreen phone. so i started searching…. we are all in love with the iphone’s looks but i wanted an opinion from an iphone user… he said no way!!! it is very limited… anything you want costs!!!! on my nokia 5800 i have free movies, free mp3, free aplications… and lets be frank… symbian software apears each week by the dosen…. it has absolutely everithing it needs…
only one complaint. i use a program smartmovie or something like that to play avi and if i make a sudent move or i watch for to long the phone crashes, it turns off and that isn’t normal but i’ll find some other program to see if the problem persists
Researchers have discovered a flaw within Apple’s iPhone SMS feature, an exploit that could allow a hacker access to your iPhone, disabling it and rendering it utterly useless. The exploit was publicized today at Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas today.
Cybersecurity researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner discovered how they can disable any iPhone via a simple SMS. The exploit sent consumers into pandemonium, questioning if they should shut off their iPhone’s as of Thursday, when the exploit was demonstrated and documented to the public. The exploit shows up on the victims device as a single square character.
