iPhone dev team has confirmed that the software unlock for the iPhone 3G (with a baseband of 2.11.07) is ready. And they are all set to release it via Cydia soon (yes that means you need to jailbreak first).

Instructions from the dev team

  1. #  The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
  2. # This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
  3. # You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
  4. # The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.  It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.
  5. # Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at.  We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.
  6. # Mac to OS X 10.5.6 does not support DFU mode, so that wont support this unlock.
