Apple terms Jailbreaking (aka Cydia) as illegal under DMCA | All on the iPhone, iPod touch & iPad

One doubt that genuinely in my mind is the security perspective while using Cydia apps. We certainly know that Apple is tough to ensure that Appstore apps are secure enough. But what about the 3rd party apps coming from Installer and Cydia? How much can we trust them? Raising the same concern Apple for the first time has termed Jailbreaking as illegal.

According to Apple tampering with iPhone’s operating system and bootloader would cause reliability issues with the handsets. The Apple iPhone OS code itself is protected by copyrights. The company also argues that the practice will contribute to the prevalence of pirated software and the illegal distribution of other protected content.

While EFF that is seeking exemption for Jailbreaking under DMCA, Apple certainly has a valid point (apart from securing their commercial interests with the AppStore)

Apple’s iPhone support department has received literally millions of reported incidents of software that crashes on jailbroken iPhones, although it works properly on unmodified iPhones. For example, one recent software crash caused by jailbroken phones was reported over 1.6 million times from users of just 10,000 jailbroken phones. Two other recent crashes caused by jailbroken phones were reported over 2 million times and over 2.4 million times, respectively.
