Apple gave a new direction to smartphones when it launched its AppStore last year. A secondary source of income that we considered App Store to be; is turning out to be a big one!
In less than a year the Apple App Store is about to reach the $1 billion sales figure! Another milestone for the Cupertino based giant. With 25000+ apps and over 500 million downloads so far (and counting); the AppStore has been an eye opened for competitors.
Apple has reported a $303 million increase in the company’s ‘music-related sales’ aka iTunes for December quarter. Since iTunes music sales have been more or less flat the analyst (Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf) believes the AppStore revenue to be around $203 million. This already indicated a $800+ revenue for a year. And the rate at which App Store / iPhone 3G is growing – $1 bln wont be too far by years end!
