Appstore developers threaten legal action to get their payments? | All on the iPhone, iPod touch & iPad

Apple has had a tough year with iPhone developers. Firstly there was lot of protest over unreasonable rejections faced by deserving apps and then the return policy / payment issue. However now as Apple gets ready to unveil the iPhone OS 3, the developers are planning to sue them for non payment.

Many iPhone developers have reported non payment since late 2008. With the enormous success and glory that Apple has brought to the entire smartphone industry with Apps, some developers have made millions while others now plan to sue Apple to get their dues cleared.

Over 30000 apps are live on the AppStore and 1 billion downloads have been crossed! Apple certainly is having a tough time handling this traffic of app sales and developers payout. Here are a few excerpts from the iPhone developers forum.

How many people do you need for a class action (I know jack about legal stuff). Apple has treated me horribly for months; rejecting things for no reason, being rude to me on the phone, flat out lying to me (and being caught in the lie) several times AND they are severely late with my payments…I hate to say it but if nothing changes soon; sign me up for the class action.

I’m in the same boat – only 1 payment since Jan (I’m owed payments for pretty much all regions). I’ve sent 5 emails now with zero response (in the past, they had been quite responsive). I’ve received payments for all regions before (back in Nov last year) so I know my banking info is setup correctly. [Source]

I think what you have to understand is the sheer volume of work the app store has create. From a purely logistical standpoint, you now have tens of thousands of vendors (app developers), whom you owe money to in several different currencies and countries. From an accounting standpoint the app store is a nightmare. There will undoubtedly be hiccups and issues, but to call this system anything short of a spectacular success is plain ignorant.
