iPhone 3GS vs Samsung Jet S8000 – (Preview)

Samsung Jet has just been unveiled (along with other releases in the Omnia series) by Samsung and it sells to you with its 800Mhz processor and 5MP camera. However the one line answer to a very popular question:

“Is it an iPhone Killer”: NO

“why?”: the OS! Done

A 800Mhz processor inside is no good if your software base isn’t equipped to handle it. Initial reviews suggests that the Jet is sluggish and the web browser isn’t good enough to take down the iPhone 3GS. iPhone has a 600Mhz processor backed with an amazing GPU that supports OPENGL 2.0, that’s the killer punch when it comes to performance.

Apart from that a digital compass, web integration, UI, music quality,  leading onscreen keyboard, App store and iPod features like VoiceOver etc are places where the Samsung Jet can only play catchup with the iPhone 3Gs. Jet does have a AMOLED screen, better video playback, Flash supported web browser and a 5MP camera to its credit. But it fails to beat the iPhone 3GS by just having a Facebook / Google app inbuilt. Samsung’s app store isn’t live yet and the gaming on iPhone makes it a real all rounder. I really doubt if Samsung can beat iPhone on either sides convincingly – media and Internet smartphone, though this is a good attempt and given the global reach of Samsung, they would probably do well with the Jet. But beating the iPhone 3GS in US? NO!

Samsung S800 is sleeker and smaller than the iPhone 3Gs, the Jet also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack and microUSB port with 16GB of inbuilt memory. You can add micro SDHC cards to bump the capacity. The device works with ActiveSync thus again gets the mass audience over the iPhone easily. But no breakthrough product that will challenge the iPhone dominance in full touchscreen market. IF reasonably priced this would be a real competition for the Nokia 5800 and the upcoming Nokia 5530.

  • & motion-response UI
  • Divx, XviD video support
  • Multitasking
  • Microsoft ActiveSync
  • SRS Sound Effect
  • Water and Oil resistant oleophobic coating
  • Digital compass
  • Spotlight Search
  • Landscape keyboard in all apps
  • VoiceOver (Voice Controls)
  • Shake to change music

The usual iPhone drawbacks remain. No Bluetooth file transfer, no flash etc. But the strong points are intact. Samsung Jet is a nice package and gives competition to the iPhone 3GS, but won’t appeal to the high end users who realize the iPhone 3GS quality and innovative UI. Good price and Samsung will have a winner over the LG arena, Lg Cookie, Nokia 5800 and the upcoming 5300.

Where Jet leads and trails:
Flash Content is supported this is really good. However the Bad usability of web browser gives iPhone a good lead. Tapping the touchscreen to click small buttons is a pain (when surfing).

The OS isn’t that smart after all. The 3D cube sucks IMO, and you cannot rearrange icons in this device.  Lot of camera features with a  better camera and a flash light is my best bet, but the usability and speed of the OS is missing.

this is prolly the gayest article ever, not correct info

theodin 07.07.09 at 4:28 pm

interesting article. Although This does feel like a slightly one sided argument. I do have a lot of respect for the iphone, but I think if you take value for money in the UK as comparison you will see that you are getting an awful lot of phone for your money with the Samsung Jet. The camera is immense, and video playback is great, not to mention the microSDHC. Liittle things like the universal headphone jack and microUSB port, all make this phone a very real prospect to anyone looking to upgrade to a touchscreen phone without the pocket pinching price.

nullgod 07.12.09 at 10:11 pm

8-O and why do these articles not make a mockery of the crappy resolution of the iphone camera…and more important who the hell has pockets so big as to fit that monster. I like a small phone, not a 12″ portable tv.

nixxy 07.28.09 at 9:38 pm

For starters this article is very one-sided. Furthermore, the battery life is up to 8.2 hours talk-time not 5. Also the Samsung Jet has a very good QWERTY and T9 Keyboard. Finally the Samsung Jet is slightly less weight and size at: 110g,108.0 x 53.5 x 11.9mm compared with the Iphone 3GS at: 135g, 115 x 62.1 x 12.3mm.

the Apple funs dont change theyr view..
iven with a phone that for the 3º time came out and still dont have full correction from great bugs like send files by bluetouth dont delete phonebook one by one etc just the 3gs make video and send mms , Apple is learning but very slow. not iven the box they changed.. looks like the crap is the same.. 3g not working etc.. the fact is that Iphone is a good gadget sells good and has good games to play on it but i prefer a PSP allways, but has a phone my old nokia 3660 makes better send mms files over boutouth and makes some kind of 3g call.
for 600€ of the bug phone and 339€ over the jet i think is obviouse.

(just so the Apple funs give respect to recieve the one.. and you dont give it.. continue with the “i´m a mac..” and soo but you just spend lots of money on gadgets more limiteded and say they are the best in the world.. hehehe)

Its is nice phone but doesn’t compete with the iPhone 3GS as it doesn’t have an AppStore..However, the phone Im waiting for is the new Nokia N900 running Maemo 5..Also it features mozilla powered browser making internet browsing better than ever before on any Nokia phone..

Lukas 09.07.09 at 11:41 pm

I deffinitely think that samsung Jet is better because iPhone is just too big and its too highly protected (can’t even get proper games for free or a good price).

SAMSUNG JET is the best phone right now…to all iPHONE 3G users, you need to accept the fact that JET is a top of the line right now…LOL

Ben 09.21.09 at 1:58 am

Samsung jet is a better phone (apart from it hasnt got multitouch) but samsung didnt take advantage of what it could be!
They have not even made a fucking facebook app for it yet!
I love its badass screen, widgets and loads of other cool features but unless they take app seriously it will continue to fail.
All the top phones from each manufacturer should now have proper app support otherwise people would buy the crappy iPhone for its apps

john carter 09.21.09 at 2:43 pm

Hi
I have my jet for about a month now and have had time to compare it to my wifes iphone.
imho
screen size : iphone wins
bluetooth: well iphone bluetooth is half assed at best, jet wins
browser: the zoom on the jet is very frustrating to use resulting in the page resizing when you try to click a link: winner iphone
the jet has this concept of profiles where you tell the browser to use gsm or wifi. so at home it will use the wifi but out and about it dosen’t switch to gsm => manual swich to gsm. the problem is that when back home it will continue to use gms when wifi is present. iphone switches automatically : iphone wins.

Sergio 09.22.09 at 11:21 pm

hi again.. what kind of comparation is that? you whant to compare? ok let´s do it my way ..
camera 5 Mpixel .. Jet wins
Flash .. Jet wins
Video call.. Jet wins
durability of batery.. Jet wins
built in GPS .. Jet wins
micro usb conect (universal.) Jet wins

bluetooth files and share .. Jet wins
FM radio ..Jet wins
Price (almost half).. jet wins
smal and pocket frendly .. jet wins
extra memory card upgradeble .. jet wins
etc etc that you dont say nothing about.. why?

JonnyB 10.12.09 at 5:16 am

hmm let me see;
app store?
iPhone wins
best qwerty keyboard for a touchscreen phone?
iPhone wins
far greater memory?
iPhone wins(32gb)
better video capablites?
iPhone wins(30 fps)
better OS?!
ahahaha cmon you know the answer:]
and better faster browsing experience?
iPhone baby

greg 10.14.09 at 7:09 pm

i have a samsung jet and what a phone.it incredable, this is a wee little phone with lots and lots of spunk. and looks good to try it out…

Pierre 10.14.09 at 8:01 pm

To JonnyB:
There is a little problem in in your comparation, this is that, in fact, you only ask one question which is “Who’s got the best soft ?”
I think you could answer IPHONE to this question, but JET wins in the 10 first questions that SERGIO made !!!
So,I vote JET.

ted 10.22.09 at 8:47 am

I go for jet because it caters what i want. divX/xvid support, 5mp camera, FM radio, traditional keypad, flash support in browser, multitasking. at almost half the price of your iphone.

Ray 10.26.09 at 2:19 am

better video capablites?
iPhone wins(30 fps)

Why does iphone win there?..
Jet has the same, and with better resolution..
cant trust your opinion when you dont know what youre comparing too

sujan 10.26.09 at 9:43 pm

well..me too..for Jet ..Got this phone and was thinking of writing something something similar everyone out here has written.number of features where jet will beat the iphone 3g heads down.happy to have jettttttt……….

sujan 10.26.09 at 9:44 pm

yes folks i want to know..in jet do you have the facility to put the album cover in the music folders? just like iphone/?was just wondering if its there or not?/because in the phone few in built music folder is with the album cover.

Sergio 10.27.09 at 11:10 am

yes Sujan.. just sincronise with windows media player or some other and the albuns cover´s apear automatic if you have them on your pc player. very easy..

just for the iphone lunatics my friend that have an iphone and just with last jailbrake and some aplication finaly he can send and recieve for the first time a picture by bloutooth… one year after he buy it.. inst that great??
lool well some times the iphone hangs with the aplication.. but he always can say he can do it.. and some can´t

no one have say nothing about the new ibomb 3gs .. that is better than iphone.. lool pure bomb!!! in that jet loose for iphone.. it doenst explode..

Nicolai 10.29.09 at 3:45 pm

Funny, It’s so obvious to see who owns a Iphone and who got the Jet.. I bet the most of these comments are made by people only owning one of the two phones. Of course the one you own is the winner. And you can find several things one phone got that the other one is missing. I personally just got the Iphone yesterday. And my friend got the Jet. So we will see what kinds of fights there is gonna happen there.

UC Loz 11.02.09 at 9:13 am

Hey i am useing my jet right now and the QWERTY is just as good of not better , with T9 sopport and the option to use the trational key pad as well. im not just a fanboy of the jet i also have have a ipod touch. As for all the problems people have found with the jet fortunately i have got my hands on the new firmware soon to released and i can say that it is a lot faster than the current FW and easily keeps up with the speed of the iphone and beating it in some aspects therefore utilizing the 800mhz prosseser. the new firmware also lets u move around the icons in the menu screen in both portrait and landscape mode, the browser is faster and scrolling and clicking issues made a lot batter,a revamped media player and, media browser giving for a more modern look with smother scrolling and better “cover flow” like aspect. there has been a vast improvement in the speed and quality of the camera making it even better than before. with the up and coming app store for the jet. this means the jet could beat the iphone

Mac 11.16.09 at 3:56 pm

I think that the iPhone prize is much far than cheap and for less money u get much more. I will soon buy the Jet and i think it is ine of the best cells atm. New model, great software. And 3G’s iphone camera is only 2mp. omfg. My k750i has 2mp camera. so i should better keep my sony erricsson. Jet is the best!!

dany 11.25.09 at 11:20 pm

samsung jet is way better than iphone 3gs here are the good things about jet:
-respond wery fast (especially in my internett)
-can have open more pages at once.
-u can browse faster.
-best video quality and film quality ever.
-the browse on everything is wery fast.
-much better colors at 3,1 inch screen (amoled)
-load videos and pages lot faster than iphone 3gs.
-u can have millions of applications open but u wont even see one lagg.
-the resisitive touch screen wont get damaged if it fall and u can use finger and nail.
the bad about samsung jet.
-it got a ugly resisitive touch screen where u got to do pressure to use touch screen. :(

asdf fdas 11.30.09 at 12:26 pm

To Jhonny B,

samsung jet has also 30 fps, and it has 120fps, so what did u try to prove?

and all the other points ur pointing out is wrong, check your facts boy…

Francesco 01.09.10 at 5:02 am

I’ve a Samsung jet from 2 months. Good phone. But i think the best phone this year, will be the Google Nexus One

Eugene 02.07.10 at 4:38 am

I have neither of the two but if there is one thing i have to say is well done Samsung, No matter how many features u added u managed to keep that Samsung feel. U all know it that crappy ass feeling that want to make you snap the thing in two. Truly congratulation on making doing something as simple as using wireless such a pain in the ass. Personally I prefer a phone that doesn’t make your hand cramp from scrolling to much by having to go back and forth and back and forth to get something done, that with a 5800 could be done in 3 taps
