Apple recently launched firmware 3.1 for the iPhone/ iPod Touch users. It included great features like minor bug fixes, save original videos while editing them, save video attachments, MMS and much more. However, there have been several problems reported on the firmware 3.1. Users report that after upgrading their iPhone to firmware version 3.1 they face problems like iPhone suddenly shutting down, lesser battery life, slow and sluggish performance and also iPhone getting bricked.
Header22 first was the first one to report that his iPhone 3G suddenly shuts down after he has upgraded his OS to 3.1 and it occurs quite often which is a big problem.
iPhone users have also reported that the OS 3.1 has further reduced iPhones battery life making life worse for all the iPhone lovers out there. A user has also reported that after upgrading to firmware 3.1 his iPhone went into recovery mode showing error 2006, 1611 and 26.
Our suggestion to all these users would be to downgrade the firmware version to 3.0 OR wait for Apple to lauch a new firmware with these bugs removed.
All these users might be an exception case, but if they aren’t Apple will seriously have to look into this matter and launch an new updated OS to fix all these bugs. If you are one of these who have upgraded their OS to 3.1 and facing problems please do report it in our comments section.

Within the first day of updating to firmware 3.1 the phone had shut down on me 2 times and has be doing it atleast once everyday for the past week, I did a full restore on my from from iTunes thinking it was just a bug in the software but I was wrong. I haven’t really noticed a lower battery life but the sudden shut downs are getting ridiculous!
Since upgrading to 3.1 my 3GS seemed to be getting rather hot and the battery, that would normally last the whole day, emptied in under 3 hours. I took it to the Apple store and they tried reloading it, but ended up replacing it no problem, but the replacement phone came with 3.0 firmware – so I ran that and everything was fine for a few days, restored the battery life – and no heat. Yesterday I took the plunge and upgraded the firmware to 3.1 – and the problem came back – lousy battery life and heat. So I will be backing out the firmware today to 3.0
Very slow wake and even let me answer calls, to the point that I’ve missed several. Restarting helps for awhile, but then it returns.
I advice you to downgrade your firmware version to 3.0 and wait for Apple to come out with an update to OS 3.1 solving all these bugs..

Since I upgraded, my iphone has been shutting down and will not come back on. I got it to come back on 2 days ago and the battery was still full, but now it has shut down again today. Not sure what to do.
My phone is doing much of the same. I have also noticed that when it crashes it heats up a ton. I took mine in today and have been scheduled for an appointment with a genius, we will see what they have to say.
Same here, I updated to 3.1 over the weekend have have been going through shutdowns regularly. I like the suggestion of downgrading to 3.0 until a fix is out. Thanks for the posts!
Mine has been shutting down 3-5 times per day, with much worse battery life.

Had 1st generation iPhone, loved it! Upgraded to 3GS hate it, keeps shutting down and locking up. Called Apple told to restore it. I’ll see what happens now. Also noticed reduced battery life. My next step is Apple store.

Upgraded to 3.1 the day it became available. Have had zero problems.
Ever since updating to 3.1, the phone has frozen a number of times, battery life has been dramatically reduced, podcasts are out of order, calls and texts coming in delayed. Anyway to go back to 3.0? This update was obviously not ready for primetime.
My iPhone’s battery life drops down from 35% to about 40% in about 5 hours of standby.

All the apps that iTunes says it could not backup regularly open and then mediately close. The only way to fix it is reinstall one of them and then they all work for a short time
Found it, thanks to suggestions on the Apple discussion board! Turning off WiFi completely eliminated the problem. Of course, I have no WiFi but the phone is usable now.

Can switching of wifi clear all these problems listed above..
Every since I upgraded my iphone to the latest version it’s been randomly shutting down and not turning back on for a long time. My sister has had the same problem, even worse actually, she says it happens 5 times a day for her.
Every since I downloaded 3.1 my 3G has cutting off. My wifes 3G doesn’t shutdown as much as mine.
I installed 3.1 and jailbroke my iPhone 3G as soon as the jailbreak software was released. Don’t know why but I haven’t had any problems. Even MMS started working last night. Maybe it is something subtle happening during install. Try downloading 3.1 from http://www.iclarified.com and use shift restore to install it.
i have a viered problem in my i phone. it only workd whrn i put on charging as soon as i take off from charging it work 2 to 3 minutes and then goes off,,,, but if i keep touching its screen it work after that tooo,,, when it goes off it flashes but doesnot work ,,,until i put it back to charging,,,,
My 3G shuts down and i have to reboot to get it on again not just hold the on button, also the headphones wont control itunes or phone calls anymore.
Sorry forgot to mention i’m using 3.1, and the actual signal is worse now. Seems to drop calls often, freak out at times. Plus shorter bat life.
Same issues… Updated to 3.1…Sudden shutdown. Have toe reset to get it to turn on again.
Same issues as everyone else. This might be the worst download disaster for apple in may years. Why they continue to push the upgrade through itunes is beyond me.

I’m currently experiencing this problem. I just had my iphone last sept 17 and had it upgraded to ver 3.1 after a few days. it’s fully charged but it suddenly shuts down and never turns on again. i tried charging it again but it just wont turn on again. it wont come back until this very minute. grrr
Same problems- since 3.1 update my 3g is very slow, painfully. Can’t open emails as it takes forever, by the time I open a website my battery is gone- battery life was bad b4, now it’s just ridiculous. I hope they fix this soon- i need access to my email!!!!!
I FOUND THE SOL’N IN RESOLVING LOW BAT LIFE ISSUE! HOORAY!! I have the same problem after downloading the 3.1 software update. After downloading, my battery life lasts only about 3 hours then shut down though fully charge. Now my iphone 3g’s battery life is normal again when i followed the troubleshooting guide at apple’s website how to optimize battery life by changing your iphone’s settings. I am also having myriad problems after updating to 3.1. Very slow response times to pressing any of the buttons or the screen. Applications, even basic ones like Settings or iPod, crash frequently. Battery life is also very poor. My iPhone is almost unusable!

3.1 is causing battery percentage to show wrong numbers. When shows that it is dead you plug it in and it goes up.
yep. I upgraded the software over the wkend, it shutdown on Monday and didnt come on again for like 20 minutes. It shutdown again on Wednesday and didnt come on again until Thursday morning. It will not respond to being plugged into my mac or into the wall…. but it doesnt run slow or take away from calling features (when on)

My phone just shut off and will not turn on again. I upgrated to 3.1, 4 days ago. I also noticed the battery meter showed full for this whole time until it just shut off.

i’ve been having the same kind of problem. sudden shut downs and won’t turn on for a long time one time even over night. i freaked out and the thought of having to go all the way to the apple store stressed me out. seeing as how free time is non exsistant right at the moment.
i guess it’s time to downrade until this is fixed. 
similar problem with my 3gs 32bg 3.1 os. its jail-broken. however my problems didnt occur until installing a(n) active weather theme. then phone kept shutting down. uninstalled the theme, phone seems to be ok now.
as far as the battery usage, i am a teacher so my phone is always being used. when compared to my 3g 16gb 3.0 (jail-break) os, it seems to be about the same.
i would suggest if jail-broken, un-install the last app / theme you installed and see if it goes away. when i did that the problem went away, which makes me think it was a conflict with the programs its self.
but just my opinion
after upgrading to 3.1 my iPhone shuts itself down, the battery life is about two hours and it gets really HOT! I have an appointment at 6:10 this evening.
there is some problem with my 2g iphone….its shuts down 2 to 3 times a day……there is some problem with the firmware…what to do……
