SMS helper is a nice tweak via BigBoss Repository. It allows you to count the number of character while you are typing in the Sms composer. Though Apple added SMS forwarding and Single SMS deletion in 3.0, they denied this small but important feature of counting characters.
You can view the number of characters and the total available characters in the send tab. It replaces the send tab as you start typing. However, if you click on it, the send function is still performed.  Overall Smshelper provides a nice tweak and functions quite smoothly. But the only problem I see is that the font size is too light and is not clearly visible when viewed from a distance.
The app is available via Cydia for download. To download the app search for ‘Sms helper’ on Cydia.

Is there any way to keep the character counter but without the SMS counter? I find it rather annoying
