We have heard it before that Apple rules Social Media and here is an interesting comparison by Compete.com. In the second week of September Apple announced the new iPod nano and upgrade to the iPod touch (amongst other things), Microsoft’s latest PMP offering ZUNE HD also launched. Compete tries to analyze the spike in user interest about these devices during this period.

- The addition of a video camera to the iPod Nano resulted in a 700% week over week lift in traffic to Nano specific pages at apple.com during launch week
- Traffic to Zune.net, on the other hand, only saw a comparatively modest 90% week to week increase when the Zune HD launched
- What’s far more damaging to the Zune HD’s prospects is that the iPod Touch, which hasn’t changed drastically since its redesign in September 2008, drew virtually identical levels of interest from online consumers as the entire Zune.net site during the first two weeks immediately following the Zune HD launch
While the Apple announcement came in a bunch at a music event with no prior announcements (thus building expectations and rumors), Zune HD was announced quite some time back and was just going on sale during the 2nd week of Septermber. IMO the comparison isn’t very balanced, but does reflect that Apple rules the HYPE factor
