With the stock shortage that Apple is facing in reaching out the iPhone 3GS across the globe, you sure didn’t expect any bad news here? Apple has just release the official numbers for Q4 and another record earnings it is. Here are a few quick notes:

  • Cheaper pricing has resulted in Macbooks taking up 74% share of all mac sales
  • Apple expects a dip of 34% in gross margins as it plans to offer more value and lower pricing. Apart from that higher component cost and freight charges (specifics not provided) are the reasons.
  • Apple sold a record 7.4 million iPhones last quarter. And iPod touch sales grew 100% year on year.
  • Half billion apps out of the total 2 billion sold till date was in last quarter alone
  • Apple COO, Tim Cook “Frankly I think people are trying to catch up with the first iPhone two years ago”
  • 26 new stores were opened in the financial year. With a majority of them being outside the US for the first time

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 fourth quarter ended September 26, 2009. The Company posted revenue of $9.87 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $7.9 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.14 billion, or $1.26 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.6 percent, up from 34.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Projection of lower margins indicate to me that Apple would open up the iPhone to multiple carriers in US. With the increased competition from Android this is surely coming.
