Top 10 iPhone apps that you need from Cydia & App Store

in Reviews, Software, iPhone apps

I have the iPhone 2G since over 2 years now but the problem always has been excessive experimentation with new apps and hacks that either me or my reviewers do. This forced me to protect my personal data by using a Nokia E-series as my regular phone and the iPhone as a test phone (that enabled me to post all the latest app news all these months). However since the past 1 month I have tried to use the iPhone as my primary phone and I must admit that though I fell in love with the convenient Internet access and apps all over again, I ain’t using this to the full potential as I am still a sick using dumphones for a long time now.

I have tried to compile a list of 10 apps that one should have on an iPhone. These are my favorite and I have skipped mentioning any games here. I also understand that restricting the list to 10 was difficult and I have left out many good ones. The debate with our own team here at iPhone Help is such that I have been asked to write this = “the following apps are my top 10 choices and other editors of iPhoneHelp do not recommend these same apps”. You can also expect Piyansh, Abhishek and team to write their own list in coming weeks. For the moment here we go :)

My favorite Apps | Top Free apps to get on your iPhone / iPod touch

1. Twitter app: Being addicted to Twitter and replying on it for my day to day meetings with friends at times; the first thing I refresh every morning is my Echofon (previously known as TwitterFon). Echofon’s free version works just fine and it helps me twitpic images without any hassle. Depending on your preference you may like other Twitter apps, echofon works for me!

2. Winterboard: The iPhone UI looks real boring with same icons and no cool wallpapers since two years. Getting Winterboard is a must for all the coolness! You can also see the amazing free themes and addons for iPhone that we have.

3. SBsettings: This is something Apple must have made. The convenience of having a easy control panel which can enable / disable things in one click from anywhere on the iPhone is bliss. SB settings helps me save a hell lot of battery by switching off WiFi in 2 secs whenever not needed. We all know how much hunger the iPhone / iPod touch has for batter with all the apps, games, web and media. Apart from this SBsettings also works…. XYZ

4. IM+ Free (Instant Messenger): I never thought I will have a instant messenger tool on my list, but then this thing really saved me when I landed in Pune (a city 200 kms away from my home in Mumbai) and realised I don’t have the contact number or address of the intern who was arranging my stay for the night. Luckily I was able to ping him on Gtalk and get the details. Getting your Gtalk, Yahoo etc all in one is great. I don’t use skype or make calls, but you can consider Fring / Skype or Nimbuzz aswell. IM+ works for me. The problem I have with Nimbuzz is the mandate to register an account with them.

5. Facebook: :) Yes I know, it would have been a crime to miss this.

6. Lockdown: The fast and swift interface of iPhone can be trouble at times. You certainly don’t want noobs to end up clicking your photo gallery or other possibly sensitive areas while fiddling around with the homescreen. Since all major / native apps are generally on the homescreen, they are accessible easily. Here is where Lockdown comes in.The name and the image are pretty self explanatory :)

7. Dictionary: A good dictionary is a must for me. While I havn’t adjusted to any particular dictionary app yet, you can look at the Dictionary.com app. Suggestions for a better dictionary app welcome, I will try and update this.

8. Snap Tap: One of the great things about the iPhone is the web integration. I use this to the fullest with live pictures from my camera going to twitpic almost instantly. So may it be a cocroach that I saw in a bus or an accident, I love use the camera to the fullest. SnapTap becomes a must for a biker to use the camera effectively. Get this for some quick & steady pics.

9. SMS Helper: Being mobile and relying on SMS heavily my texting bill is more than calls. So I really love to have a check when I am going overboard. SMS Helper comes in here!

10. iFile: iFile which is available via Cydia is probably the best file system navigator available on the iPhone. It is like MobileFinder which allows you to access system files and allows renaming as well.. The app is much more stable than MobileFinder but has limited features.

Note: These apps are mentioned in no particular order of preference. #randomness

Cydia is great! When will Apple wake up and allow Springboard wallpaper, icon apps? For those people who will not not jailbreak phones it will be a gold mine.
