I didn’t have this vital stat when I said that its likely that Android could overtake iPhone in 2011 itself. One of the biggest advantages that Apple has had with the iPhone has been the amazing app market they have made around the iPhone OS. With over 140,000 apps live on the App Store, Apple rules the smartphone software market. Not only is this a great alternative revenue source, its also a huge attraction for buyers.
While the Android Market was crawling and lagging way behind the Appstore when we last checked, it comes as a shocker that they have added as many as 9000 new apps in March alone. While the sheer no of apps added do not determine quality, it is crucial to note that there is a rush amongst developers to push out something on the platform. Its a positive sign! If Google can go a step ahead and entice some high profile developers to make apps for the Android platform, it could make a big difference.
