Apple working on carrier portability with its Open SIM

Apple and chip manufacturer Gemalto are rumored to be working on an Open SIM supporting multiple careers. The SIM would allow iPhone users to shop for career services directly from the AppStore. It is also rumored to support RFID transactions allowing contactless secure shopping.

The open SIM would allow users to shop for carrier services while they purchase the phone online or from any Apple store. They need not to walk into carrier provider’s shop or log-in to their website for the services.

The SIM would consist of a flash component and a ROM area. The ROM area would consist of information by Gemalto regarding network security and other details. The flash component would consist of carrier information essential for activating the carrier services.

The programmable SIM would allow users to switch between services while roaming without the need to carry an extra SIM or visit a mobile provider for the same.

Another interesting technology that could be introduced with this open SIM would be NFC or Near Field Communication. NFC would allow users to authenticate themselves with electronic terminals using RFID and make retail purchases. The service would also increase the effectiveness of iAD by immediate conversion of marketing opportunities into sales.
