iPhone-aided Land Mine Detector

As we have already seen that iPhone can be used for knee replacement surgeries (DASH) now we can also use iPhone to detect land mines. Land mines are very effective remnants. There are many protocols to locate landmines but now with the iPhone the technology has evolved.

Metal detectors are used to find mines buried in the land. This is a time consuming process. To improve the technology computer scientists at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have used Smartphone tied with the metal detector.

Pattern enhancement tool for assisting land mine sensing (PETALS) is the system designed by the SEAS scientists which will be presented in the conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. This system will take the De-mining to a new level.

De-miners use techniques to identify the land mines. When an object is identified by the detector it makes a beep sound and a complete figure of the object is analyzed.

PETALS is a system which uses mobile devices such as iPhone to improve the efficiency to detect land mines. Here the Smartphone is mounted on the metal detector which helps to detect land mines more effectively. This technique help to improve 80% of the performance which help for better visualization of land mines.
