Super Fight: iPhone 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S II

We all know that Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the latest smartphone from Samsung that has landed in the arena to fight with the Apple iPhone 4. Personally, the battle is actually not between the Galaxy S 2 and iPhone 4, it was between the predecessor of Galaxy S 2 and iPhone 4. Both were released in 2010 and turned out to be the best selling smartphones of all the time. In fact, it was Samsung Galaxy S in the US after iPhone 4 that  had the record of largest selling device. Let us keep aside the history and move to the future. So, the question arises – does Apple iPhone 4 still have the capability to beat the Galaxy S successor – Samsung Galaxy S 2 even after the one year of its launch ? Check it out.

Samsung Galaxy SIi vs Apple iPhone 4

Hardware :

Samsung Galaxy S II comes packed with a dual core 1.2 Ghz cortex A9 processor which eventually boosts the overall performance of the device and changes can be felt when you open and switch between the applications during multitasking. On the other hand, iPhone 4 has an Apple A4 chip which is a single core. Opening as well as switching in between the applications in iPhone 4 could be a bit lag when compared with Samsung Galaxy S 2. So, we declare Galaxy S 2 as a clear winner here.

Display :

Samsung, for the first time, has come out with another quality of display called as super AMOLED plus which has been brilliantly implemented in the Samsung Galaxy S 2. The 4.3 inch (480 x 800 pixels) screen is just the another reason to buy this smartphone. On the other hand, iPhone 4 has a retina display with 326ppi (pixels per inch) that Apple claimed to be the finest display on earth and none could reach even close to that. But we have to say that Samsung has find the way to overcome that barrier. Super AMOLED plus delivers the excellent quality.

Battery life :

Being built in the OLED panel, the Samsung Galaxy S 2 display only illuminates the pixels that are needed to display the content. Hence, increasing the battery life. After turning on all the notifications including Gmail and twitter, the battery holds the phone even for a longer when connected to a wifi network. It has a stand by time of up to 710hours on 2G, 610 hours on 3G and talk time of up to 18h 20 min on 2G and up to 8h 40 min on 3G. On the flip side, iPhone 4 has standby time Up to 300 h (2G) / Up to 300 h (3G) and talk time Up to 14 h (2G) / Up to 7 h (3G). Here, it seems that Galaxy S 2 is winning the battle but we will let the user decide on it.

Camera :

Samsung Galaxy S 2 has a rear facing 8 mega pixel and 2 megapixel front facing camera with an excellent clarity whereas iPhone 4 has 5 mega pixel rear and VGA for the FaceTime calling (video conference) camera at the front. History to be told, Apple has a record of easily competing in this arena with the popular IT companies of the world. A 5 megapixel camera of iPhone 4 can be compared with other cameras and surpassed them well. But Samsung has amazingly defeated the iPhone 4 with the Galaxy S successor. The pictures taken from the 8 mega pixel camera looks real and even records HD videos at 1080p without slowing down the phone. Front facing cameras are self defined.

Software :

iOS is one of the intuitive and simplest OS in the world and no one needs a tutorial to learn it from anywhere. Once you get it in your hands, you already know what you have to do with it whereas Android OS have been customized in the Samsung Galaxy S 2 through the touchviz 4.0 which doesn’t guarantees you the pure google (you won’t need Nexus S for it). Apple constantly provides you the software upgrades frequently with each releases. So, you don’t need to worry about whether you will get the future updates or not. Android has different story altogether. You have to depend on the manufacturer to push the software upgrades, not Google itself which is a huge limitation. Without a doubt, Apple wins the battle here.

Loudspeaker/speaker :

Unlike other smartphones, the sound system in iPhone 4 has been properly designed which is neither too high nor too low whereas Samsung Galaxy S 2 sound system seems to outburst the speakers. Some people have complained that the positioning of the Galaxy S 2 is not at the right place. A singly finger can can mute almost everything at times. No doubt that Apple has designed iPhone 4 better than others when it comes to a design.

App Store/Android Market :

Now, this is the place where everything ends. Apple iPhone 4 built in iOS provides you billions of applications at your fingertips. Just visit the store, search the category and download right on your iPhone. You will find application/games for almost everything. Android doesn’t seem to do this job perfectly. When you enter the Android market, you feel a bit confused on what applications to download other than Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare etc. The distribution of applications in the android market place has not been rightly managed. Also, forget about the billions of applications/games if you are wondering for Android. In short – Apple Store wins over Android Market.

Conclusion :

Through all the above pros and cons, we can conclude that the choice completely depend on the customer’s need. If you need a smartphone that has great tech specs then opt for Samsung Galaxy S 2. If you don’t care for tech specs and need a phone that should have pool of applications and games, you are good to go for iPhone 4. As I said, the battle will remain biased until the successor of the iPhone arrives sometime in September 🙂
