Earlier, we wrote a tutorial on how to activate 3G services on an iPad GSM. Today, we will tell you that how you can get BSNL/MTNL 3G working on your iPhone 4. Due to the fact that iPad has an option to edit APN settings and iPhone 4 doesn’t, the process is entirely different from each other. The editing option in iPhone existed at the time of OS 2.0 and ended after frequent software releases. In India, most of the customer cares doesn’t have any idea on how to configure GPRS or 3G settings in iPhone which often indulge people in confusion. Currently, we have two methods to enable 3G services on any generation of iPhone.

1) Call customer care and ask them about the process of enabling GPRS/3G service on any phone. Once the services are enabled, opt for a suitable 3G plan according to your needs. You would be able to see a ’3G’ logo on the right side of your operator on the top status bar in iPhone.

2) For this method, you need to have a JailBroken iPhone and openSSH installed from Cydia.

For Mac:

Use Cyberduck or any other FTP client to get the root access. You should use the below configuration to get your device connected:

Username: root

Password: alpine

Port: 21

Host Name: IP Address (settings>Wifi>IP Address)

If you get the success in making a connection, you can process further now. Navigate to /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/.bundle. Here, look out for the carrier you are using (Airtel_XX, Vodafone_XX, MTNL_XX, BSNL_XX) etc.

Copy the carrier.plist list from directory to the desktop. Double clicking the file will open a dialog box to you. Check that ‘AllowEDGEditing” checkbox is marked.

3) For Windows Users,

Use Property List Editor to open up the carrier.plist file. You will need to edit and add this code:

<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key>
<true/>

After editing, put back the file in the same directory. If it asks to replace it, click on ‘Yes’.

4) Once you are done manipulating the system file, restart your iPhone. Now, you would be able to see APN settings under General>Settings>Cellular Data Network.

Enjoy! :)
