BigBoss group, who are mainly responsible for hosting various packages and themes in Cydia have come up with a solution called ‘Semitethered’ JailBreak. Semitethered JailBreak is really useful when you have no access to computer and you can not ‘boot tethered’ using Redsn0w. It will help you to boot into the lockscreen without being stuck into the respiring state if the device reboots due to any issues. You can’t call it an untethered JailBreak because it has its own limitations.
The only advantage we have due to the presence of a semitethered JailBreak is that you would be able to make the most out of your JailBroken iPhone, iPod touch or iPad on iOS 5. It really helps at the time of emergency. Semitethered JailBreak is still in beta stage and has only been tested on iPhone 4 GSM with iOS 5 installed. The issues which you would face after the semitethered JailBreak are listed below. Before proceeding ahead, have a look at those:
1) You can not use the native mail application.
2) You can not use the mobile safari (browser).
3) No JailBreak tweak should be installed. Otherwise, your device will enter into a respring loop till the time you boot it tethered from the tool.
However, if any of the application is your main preference, you can always use the alternatives such as ‘Atomic browser’ to surf the web, Gmail application from the App Store etc. Also, once you have installed the semitethered package, your device will take longer time to boot from the previous state. This is due to the fact that there are still some problems to set up the daemons once again. One of the reason why mobile substrate always required rebooting of your iDevice after the installation.
If you are experiencing any issues other than the mentioned above, mail BigBoss with the subject “Cydia/APT(A): semitether” to get the response. To install semitether package, add this repository in Cydia: http://thebigboss.org/semitether. After the installation, reboot your device to check wether the semitethered JailBreak is working on it or not. If it is not, use the Redsn0w to “boot tethered” and revert back in the normal state. Let’s know your thoughts in the comment section.
