Mobile phones are a basic need lately. We find people of all generations, income group and genders using mobile phones. The first mobile phone was demonstrated by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola way back in 1973 but the first commercially available mobile phone was the DynaTAC 8000x only 10 years later in 1983. But it all changed in the year 2007.

Mobile phones were meant for voice based communication between two individuals and remained that way for a long period of time before the era of smartphones begun with the introduction of IBM Simon at COMDEX in 1992. The likes of PALM, BlackBerry and Nokia ruled the smartphone market with their smartphone OS like PALM OS, BlackBerry OS and Symbia OS.

But it all changed in 2007, one man, Steve Jobs had the guts to defy the conventional phones and came up with a sleek, elegant and bar shaped device eliminating the button filled design of conventional smartphones. The iPhone was initially criticized for its design and features but eventually we witnessed the domination of iPhone in smartphone market.

Josh Heifferich summed up all the facts in a simple image which speaks everything.

This image alone tells us why Apple is in such a deep patent battle with almost every major smartphone manufacturer lately. Almost every other smartphone out there seems to be a iPhone mimic. Apple truly changed the way smartphones look.

Bonus: Well, apple is responsible for the way tablets look as well. Take a look at the image below!
