Website Launched As Attack Against DMCA With A Number Of High-Profile Supporters

After sleeping only for 10 hours in the past three days and while taking part in StartupBus, Khanifar launched a new website (FixTheDMCA.org) attacking the DMCA and educating users about the hazards of the new cell phone unlocking ban implemented by the DMCA. Khanifar was the person who initiated the petition on the White House website to protest against DMCA.

FixTheDMCA.org has backing from almost 30 high profile supports like Reddit, Mozilla, YCombinator, Electronic Frontier Foundation etc, and more are expected to support the cause in the coming few days. Kanifar said that the site helps people to contact their representatives directly through multiple channels.

Khanifar said in an email “Since there’s a lot of talk in DC about bills that would fix the unlocking issue, we want to move the conversation towards discussing and taking action on the source of the problems, and not simply address one of the symptoms.”

The anti-circimvention provision of the DMCA was supposedly created to support music labels and movie industry from piracy, but the law states that exemptions can be made once in three years which is causing the act to spread its wings and propose new laws like cellphone unlocking ban.
