Apple's New Patent : Virtual Reality Headgear Using iPhones

Apple has always been part of some interesting projects bringing innovative features coupled with simplicity. Technology enthusiasts are still amazed over its TouchID on iPhones. Also it revealed interests in integrating the Home Button with a joystick protruding out. And the latest of its projects, the Apple Watch, is grabbing attention like none other. And lately Apple has been granted with another patent reading ‘Head Mounted Display Apparatus For Retaining A Portable Electronic Device With Display’. In simpler terms, this patent can be described as a plan for a head-mounted device that is worn on user’s head and can be configured to integrate with a removable portable electronic device.
The images from the patent showcase that the proposed virtual reality headset would be designed to support the insertion of an iPhone from the side of the unit which provides to be the electronic screen for the wearer. Patent also suggests that users can use iPods for the same.

First impressions on the design resemble similarities with Google Cardboard headset and Samsung’s VR headset. Although, the patent’s documents suggest that the device features of the one used as the display unit are open to development of additional functionalities. This can be seen as integration of Siri virtual assistant voice commands for controlling this device.

Apart from the basic design of this VR headset, the patent also covers a possibility of a remote that could be used to communicate with the smartphone or iPod. This is backed up by the reason that the touch screen features of the devices being used will not be accessible from within the VR unit.
With Samsung’s VR headset into picture and also the likes of Microsoft Hololens creating modules into same direction, Apple was bound to start a similar project. However one should keep a check on expectations as many of Apple’s patents haven’t seen light yet.
