iPhone Development Team have released the software unlock for the iPhone 3G via Cydia and Installer. The same currently works with iPhone running firmware version 2.2 (yes the latest). iPhone dev team has confirmed that the software unlock for the iPhone 3G (with a baseband of 2.11.07) is ready. And they are all set to release it via Cydia soon (yes that means you need to jailbreak first).
