Rumors of the iPod Touch getting a camera coupled with a microphone is going around the iStreet (Apple Rumors). According to the reports Apple’s manufacturing partners in Asia have already started to manufacture the new device with the iPhone 3GS camera, and it would hit the markets close to October (the usual refresh time for the Apple iPod’s lineup). The only reason I am not able to digest this rumor is the fact that the iTouch already has a WiFi and Browser, with the only major difference between the iPhone and the iPod Touch being the Camera and Phone capability. Apple is moving from the traditional iPods to the iPod Touch and the iPhone, but they certainly would like to have a good differentiation between the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
What looks a much more certain possibility is the iPod Touch getting more gaming powers and HD support. We already know that the 3GS runs a monster 800Mhz processor, a cool GPU and can support HD. These might well go live on the iPod Touch. Adding a camera along with all these goodness would mean affecting the iPhone sales and also losing the ultra slim built of the iPod Touch.
Though if these rumors (which Wired does report very strongly) turns out to be true, then we would see the iPod Touch gain great VOIP importance with Skype and similar apps becoming popular. A GPS and 64GB memory can also be on the cards…
We should also note that Apple might well release the iTablet (netbook / mediapad) along with the updated iPod Touch in September / October. The year ahead is super exciting for Apple Fans 🙂
