After seeing a plethora of leaked images, videos and cases of iPod touch 3G with camera we are now left with dozens of disappointed ifans. And to please them another set of rumors claiming that technical issues have delayed the iPod touch with camera. Let me make it very clear for all – there was not iPod touch with camera nor is there any iPod touch with camera that is delayed due to any technical snags.
How would Apple have iPod touch 3G 32GB and 64GB with better gaming capabilties (OpenGL|ES 2.0) and a faster processor ready? They certainly were not planning to launch the 4G iPod touch at this event! So why not a camera iPod touch?
Game machine:
Apple has been trying its hands on the gaming sector for long. Numerous rumors in the past have speculated multi core chips being worked by Apple and on the far end even whispers of Apple buying out EA. It’s no news that Apple views the iPhone and the iPod touch as a revolutionary pocket gaming device. They certainly want to concentrate their synergies in developing that! As a result we see multiple game developers working on the platform to bring our the latest titles along with the PC / XBOX and PS releases.
Competition:
A better look at the competition would clearly suggest that no other mp3 player in the market comes close to the Apple iPods. The only thing missing from the Apple iPods is HD output which the Zune HD has tapped. Its very logical for Apple to build upon its lead on the other fronts (App Store, Internet capabilities etc) and counter these (HD support) before taking things to the next level. There is not MP3 player that sells out in millions with a camera integrated and perhaps Apple doesn’t see that as what customers really want.
Camera utility
A camera inside the iPod touch would certainly be a low end 2Mp or 3MP mobile lens that would certainly never give the digital cameras a run for their money. Nor would it make a really great camcorder. The utility of loading the sleek iPod touch with a camera (and hurting its slim structure) isn’t the best thing that Apple would do.
Pricing
Apple now manages to deliver an 8GB iPod touch at $199 and a 32GB for $299. Thats certainly with the idea to increase the value for money by giving a great internet ready pocket computer, MP3 / video Player and a compact gaming device. Adding a camera and increasing the cost of the product would do injustice to what the iPod touch is capable of without a camera.
Keep the iPhone special
Apple iPhone has sold 30million units compared to the 20million that iPod touch did. Its no secret that carrier tieups and the huge iPhone hype earns more $ for Apple than the iPod touch. iPod buyers are known to use more apps and spend more on the apps, but that doesn’t earn more profits than what the iPhone does at the moment. Reducing the difference between the iPhone and the iPod touch by adding a camera to the latter would be suicidal for Apple. It comes as no surprise to me that no iPod touch with camera was announced yesterday!
