The next gen iPhone is already in works and somewhere in secret factories its being prepared for a mega launch. The upcoming Apple event might well see the iPhone OS 4.0 being unveiled that will in all probability power all Apple handhelds ranging from the iPhone to iTablet. Boy Genius has some details at reveal what we should expect from the OS 4.0:
- As rumored, before the iPhone OS 4.0 would bring in multitasking that is being called ‘a new way of running apps in background’. Though multitasking was expected to make an appearance in the OS 3.0, it was apparently pushed out at the last moment. With the iSlate / iTablet coming in now, we should see this becoming a reality for sure
- The OS would allow multitouch gestures OS wide and not just specific apps. This makes sense for the iTablet connection 🙂
- Graphical and UI upgrades that would make navigation easier. The spotlight search was a phenomenal addon to the iPhone OS 3.0, and I am eager to see what OS 4.0 brings in
- iPhone OS 4.0 would leave out the 2G (1st gen iPhone) in the cold. Only supporting the faster 3G and 3GS. No word on iPod touch compatibility yet but this update would put the iPhones ahead of the ‘smartphone market, making them a full-fledged computer’. Wow
- The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for contacts and calendar applications.
I am also hoping that Apple would have its own MAPS application coming out with the iPhone OS 4.0. This should replace the Google Maps or perhaps compliment it? Improve it? Its clear that Apple is banking on software to do the trick for them, and IMO that’s what has kept the 3GS afloat till now! A week to go and excitement are building. We shall cover the Apple event live on Jan 27th.
