The battle against iPhone hasn’t been easy for anyone. Particularly the established players in the market like Nokia have felt the heat to a large extent, while others like Android & Palm WebOS have done reasonably better. However in a bid to speed up things against the growing crowd in the smartphone arena, Symbian has decided to go free and open source. This would let Nokia keep its chin up while sticking to the Symbian platform (they avoided adopting WinMo / Android) and at the same time allow developers to play with the Symbian platform and who knows, we would soon start seeing this platform powering netbook? Tablets? PMP?
“The dominant operating system provider out there is Symbian, and now we are offering developers the ability to do so much more,” says Lee Willians, the Symbian Foundation’s executive director.
