After all the angst of Steve Jobs against Adobe Flash, the HTML5 is been talked about a lot. It is a really heating up battle and even Microsoft has been supporting HTML5 a lot. After working a lot with HTML5 even I have come to think that it is quite spectacular, but I have not yet come to believe that Flash will soon witness it’s downfall.
Microsoft who have been going supporting HTML5 along with Apple, now think that Flash will still play an important role on the Web. Flash videos are a very important part of the web and it has been dominating since a very long time. Truly, with all the HTML5 hype which Apple has created, the HTML5 market has got a slight uplift but as of now it is just an artificial market. Flash Developers who thrive on this Adobe platform have little to worry as the whole of web and non Apple players are committed to it. Steve Jobs has his wall gardened experience for the iPhone OS, but for now the rest of the world is big enough for Flash developers!
Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of the Internet Explorer team, said that IE9 will only support the H.264 HTML5 video playback and not the rival open source codec, Ogg Theora. Also, another major obstacle for full HTML5 support is from the companies who will now have to develop OS or hardware updates to get full GPU support from browser. Another thing is that currently full HTML5 only works on Apple’s proprietary software and until other hardware / software makers start supporting it, there will definitely be good market for Flash & Microsoft Silverlight.
With all this it seems that Microsoft has not yet lost hope for Adobe’s Flash and even though with all its security, performance and reliability issue it is still a hit amongst majority of the consumers.
