Recent data from analytics firm Nielsen is pointing towards that fact that Apple has managed to maintain its position as the number smartphone seller in the US. However, the bad news for Apple is that Android is fast catching up and the rate of growth for Android is much quicker than that of iOS which seems to have plateaued after the launch of the iPhone 4.
According to the data for November 2010, Apple had captured a respectable 28.6 per cent of the smartphone market share in the US. This was marginally p the 27.9 percent share that it had held in October. Android however grew from 22.7 per cent to 25.9 percent during the same period. For comparisons sake let us also add BlackBerry in to the picture. Its share fell from 27.4 per cent to 26.1 per cent during the same time.
Another statistic that Nielsen points out is the fact that a large number of users (as high as 45 per cent) who bought a phone in November had purchased a smartphone. This shows the increasing clout if smartphones and the fact that the smartphones market is growing faster than ever before.
Another notable fact is that when you consider the sales of just the last six months, Android has done far better than iOS with a mammoth 40.8 per cent share in that market compared to Apple’s 26.9 per cent share.
