If we are to believe a jobs listing on Apple’s official Apple job portal, Apple is in the process of developing a homegrown Maps Application that will replace the default one that currently ships on iOS devices. The job portal has a listing for the position of an “iOS Maps Application Developer,” who would work in the headquarters of the Company at Cupertino. The company is looking for a person who will improve the Maps applications currently running on iOS devices.
It is now thought that the revamped application might make its debut with iOS 5. The Maps Application that currently ships on iOS hasn’t seen a major revamp until now and with Google continuing to prefer its Android OS for updates, Apple might have felt the need to work on its own application. To this effect they had back in 2009 bought Placebase, a company that had experience in mapping solutions. Then in 2010 it bought Poly9, a similar company.
It is believed that resources would these two companies would be used to develop the new application.
