You must have heard of rumors of 3D display on iPhone coming in the future. What about an idea to experience it now ? Yes, an application known as ‘i3D’ has been arrived in App Store that allows you experience the same 3D environment on your iPhone 4 and iPad 2 using the Head Coupled Perspective (HCP) technique. Instead, it doesn’t uses anyone of the accelerometer or gyroscope technology of the devices. All you need is to align your face correctly in front of the front facing VGA camera of your iPhone and let the application create a 3D window for you. One of the advantage of using this i3D is that you don’t need to have 3D glasses to see the 3D view.
Here, it should be noted that the application entirely depends upon the light conditions. So, once you download it for free in the App Store, don’t forget to read the instructions properly. HCP doesn’t even create a stereoscopic but a monocular 3D display so that the same picture is seen by both the eyes. However, there is a probability that in future, i3D will be combined with the stereoscopic technology for creating better 3D effects or taking it to the next level. All credits goes to Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay at the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (EHCI) Research Group of the Grenoble Informatics Laboratory (LIG), University Joseph Fourier (UJF) for developing the application.
