The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) is a program that ranks products and displays based on environmental friendliness. EPEAT is used by hundreds of companies, universities and government agencies in dozens of countries. Some major Institutes and companies even have standards set to purchase products depending on EPEAT ratings.
According to Robert Frisbee, CEO of EPEAT, Apple requested EPEAT to remove its complete lineup of 39 Desktops and Laptops from EPEAT ratings. This is a huge blow to Apple itself as it might loose out on several potential customers because of their products not being certified to be environmentally friendly.
The main reason being pointed out to is for the new technology adopted by Apple in building their new Retina MacBook Pro. To decrease the size of their new macbook Apple had to integrate the LCD right into the panel itself making it highly unrepairable. Apple also had to glue the battery to the case to save more space. Overall iFixit rated it as highly unrepairable and users will have to replace the who assembly set in case of likely repairs.
But one thing still unclear is that why Apple requested removal of all its products from EPEAT ratings. Most of them were rated as high as 8/10 by iFixit for repairability quotient. Though apple uses some unfamiliar screws in their products which cannot be opened by just anyone their products as such are very much repairable.
Apple still offers recycling programs right through their website which makes it atleast a bit eco-friendly. Rumors are floating around that Apple might create its own rating standards which still is pretty much a rumor.
