Unless you were in a cave or something, you would surely know that Apple’s iPhone is actually manufactured by a company known as Foxconn to whom Apple have given the rights to manufacture their device. Foxconn has huge factories in China where they manufacture your favorite iDevices in millions. Apparently, their huge facilities are still falling short of capacity – thanks to the surge in the demand for the new iPhone 5. This obvious fact was revealed by none other than Terry Gou, the Chairman of Foxconn.
The division of Foxconn (which happens to be the parent company) which makes iPhone 5 is Hon Hai Precision Industry. Foxconn has another subsidiary unit called Foxconn International Holdings which manufactures devices for other Foxconn clients including Nokia and Huawei. Thanks to the surge in demand, FIH facilities too are chipping in to make new iPhone 5’s – Gou told reporters.
Gou also added that it was not easy for them to add a new production unit for making the iPhone because of the fact that manufacturing an iPhone is “not an easy job to do”. That coupled with the high demand for the phone seems to have put Foxconn in a fix.
The iPhone 5 went on sale nearly two months ago on September 21 after its announcement made a week before that. Although criticized for being not a very huge upgrade over the iPhone 4s, Apple fans never really bothered and the iPhone 5 managed to create sales secord with millions of handsets being sold within the span of a few days.
The device was also recently launched in India. More on that here.
