Just when you thought Google has had the last laugh after police officials in Australia last week decided to issue warnings to iOS Maps users to be a bit more cautious in trusting the software, here comes yet another warning. This time though it is who Google is at the receiving end.
As it turns out, police in the Australian State of Victoria seems to be a tad too concerned about people’s reliance on online mapping tools and GPS technology on the whole. The police in Colac a place west of Melbourne claims that a “fault” with Google Maps might put people’s lives at risk.
The road which is known as Wild Dog Road (ahem) according to officials is a one way and is not designed for heavy traffic. Google Maps, according to officials is directing people and traffic towards this road which might in the future cause an accident in which the police and the road transport department could be blamed.
Google on its part has said that its Mapping Tool will only send users down the Wild Dog Road if the destination they are heading towards is located on that road. If not, it will suggest alternate routes. This is quite reasonable and it seems the authorities here are jumping the gun and blaming Google for what is essentially an issue with the road.
It seems the Australian police is playing safe here and is issuing warnings just to save their face just in case something untoward happens on this route.
