It is rumoured that CEOs of Apple and Intel met to discuss over a partnership for Intel to produce Apple’ A series chips used in its mobile devices. A rumour that keep surfacing every year that it is a logical move for Apple to go ahead with Intel to manufacture its mobile processors as Intel has already been supplying processors for Apple’s computers since 2005. Intel has been struggling to keep up pace with the Mobile industry since its inception with new age mobile processors. It has been trying to push its processors into mobile devices but sadly none of them took off yet. Its much hyped Xolo series of phones are still waiting to make an impact, the Motorola Razr I looked promising but it did not manage to sell quite well either.
Way back in 2000 Intel started its domination in the PC market with its series of processors including pentium and then the core I3/5/7 but starting 2007, when Apple launched iPhone, things started diverging from the PC era to the mobile era. Reports from past few quarters show that the demand for PCs and Laptops has been falling steadily but the demand for mobile devices has been peeking at a good rate. This shows the need for Intel to reform itself quickly to stay relevant in the industry for a longer time.
It seems to be a tricky situation for Apple, the recent rumours of Apple considering some major R&D in the semiconductor segment by appointing Bob Mansfeld as the person in charge show that Apple might be coming up with something serious but then the rising tensions between Apple and Samsung might drive Apple to opt for Intel to supply its next set of processors for iPhone and iPad if things work out well. Nevertheless, 2013 definitely seems to be a critical year for Apple.
