There have been multiple instances in the last one year where Apple’s strict app approval process was bypassed due to various unknown reasons. Apple and Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs are quite keen on avoiding adult content and other restricted content on their app store. Steve Jobs even cited that Android store support adult content but Apple’s App Store is curated and has necessary steps in place to handle it. Apple recently added a field in the App Store that displays minimum recommended age by Apple to download that application right besides the application logo on the App Store listings.

In the wake of events that happened last year with famous app launches like Vine from Twitter and the photography application 500px Apple had to tighten its App Store layout to double ensure that it will not get sued for not providing exact information to users before the apps are downloaded. Twitter’s 6 second video recording application, Vine, was featured on the home page of App Store after launch in the “Editor’s Choice” category but sadly the featured videos within the app had a bit of adult content whereas the app never had the right age restriction settings applied.
Similar thing happened in the case of 500px as well where users reported few nude pictures being shared on the app in public but the app never had any appropriate age restrictions set. Currently both the apps have a minimum recommended age of 17+ years for accessing the app.
Apple might have added this feature in a move to caution parents with young kids to be careful about the accidental in-app purchases as well that were reported last month.
