Digitization of Indian Railways

The m-Indicator app is a Mumbai travel guide and is literally a boon when it comes to checking train timings, the different routes of trains, buses or bus stops for different bus numbers. A week ago, IRCTC launched its android app called IRCTC Connect which would let you search & book tickets (No-doubt, m-Indicator being such a HIT). Initially, One would need to visit the desktop site to view or cancel previously booked tickets. The option is now available directly through the application. It’s free to download and is available on major platform such as iOs, Windows & Android store.

Recently, The Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has launched a mobile application named as NTES (National Train Enquiry System) for the Android and Windows 8 platform through which passengers can make inquiries relating to their trains, making our lives much easier. The app is free to download and is already available on Google’s Play store.
One of the helpful features of the app is “Spot Your Train” feature which promises you to give the time details of any train. It provides you with ‘Scheduled Time’ and actual time of arrival as well as that of departure. It also lets you know if there is a delay. Moreover, letting you know where your train is at any given moment.
Another cool yet helpful feature is the “Live Station”. Once you enter the station you are at presently and the one you wish to go, It then shows you a list of all the trains leaving for that destination within the next 2 or 4 hours.
Another feature which cannot be ignored is the ‘Train Schedule’ trait which gives you detailed station-by-station information about any particular train. It will include a list of stations it will be halting at as well as the arrival and departure times at each of these stations, providing you with the distance between each station in kilometers. There are other features including “Cancelled Trains”, “Rescheduled Trains”and “Diverted Trains”.

Trains are considered to be the lifeline of India. Applications such as m-Indicator, IRCTC Connect and NTES help to give out information easily to the users on their smartphone which is indeed, Digitization of Indian Railways and evidence of India’s development.
