Location Tracking may sound like a boring and dull feature which most of the smartphones have these days. However, Apple is bringing a nice twist to this old feature.
Apple has filed a new patent titled “Sharing location information among devices” that details how a device can track another device in real time. This feature is already available for Google Waze users who can see all other Waze users in the map. Apple can also use this feature in ‘Find My Friend‘ application which notifies other users when their friends have checked in a location.
The location data can then be communicated over WiFi, cellular and even Bluetooth. This technology works on peer-to-peer connections and use other user’s device as the destination. If implemented this feature can make real time tracking even easier and would pioneer a new way to use Maps. Another possible use could be allowing other apps to access this feature. Other features include a mirroring technology in which one device can see exactly what the other device is looking at in the maps including favorite places. It also allows users to communicate from the same window in real time.
The patent further goes on to say that the feature could be used on a human being, animal and robot highlighting further uses of the new technology. Currently, path tracking is not a big industry for moving objects but this appears to be a perfect solution for the same.
Apple’s friend tracking patent was first filed for in January 2013 and credits Eran Sandel, Elad Harush, and Roman Guy as its inventors.
