Samsung launched the much-awaited Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in India yesterday. The Galaxy S6 Edge is priced for Rs. 58,900, whereas the Galaxy S6 price is Rs. 49,900. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have top of the class specs. They sport a 5.1 inch, Quad HD display which takes the pixel density to whopping 577 PPI. Both the phones run on an Exynos processor and are packed with 3GB of RAM. The rear camera has a 16 Megapixel sensor while the front camera has a 5 Megapixel one. The rear one has features like Auto Real-time High Dynamic Range (HDR), Smart Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and IR Detect White Balance. The devices are powered by a 2550 mAh battery which is non-removable. They are available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB variants. The only difference between the S6 and the S6 Edge is that the Edge has a curved screen on both sides.
On the other hand, the iPhone 6 has features that a mid-level Android phones do. It has a display with the resolution of 1334 X 750 which takes the pixel density to a good 326PPI. The phone comes with just 1GB of RAM and runs on Apple’s own chip. Apple also persisted with an 8 Megapixel sensor on the rear camera which first shipped with the iPhone 4s. There is also 1.2 Megapixel sensor on the front. In terms of battery, the device is powered by an 1810mAh one. Even though the iPhone specs don’t seem too exciting on paper, they can provide as good a performance as any Android flagship. This is mainly because Apple has optimised its software (iOS) very well so that it gets the best of the hardware. The price of the iPhone 6 in India starts from Rs. 53,500.
Samsung and Apple have been arch rivals since a very long time. Apple has repeatedly accused Samsung of copying its hardware and software. Ex-Apple CEO, the late Steve Jobs had promised to destroy Samsung and Android as a whole. Samsung sales have been on the decline since a while. It lost its number one ranking in India and China to Micromax and Xiaomi respectively. Their Galaxy S5 faced a lot of criticism for having an uninspiring design and their TouchWiz skin too hasn’t been liked by most. On the other hand, Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus had unprecedented sales. A lot of iPhone users were demanding for a bigger iPhone and Apple finally did that. Big screen phones are also very popular in Asian countries and hence the two new iPhones sold well in countries like China. Now the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will go on sale in India from 1oth April, 2015. How it affects iPhone sales in the country is remained to be seen.
