iOS 9 has been giving a lot of surprises ever since it’s launch has been declared. An unknown feature was buried in the developer’s documents which suggests Apple for building in support for ad blocking along with privacy applications. With the help of the new API it removes the elements from Web views.
One of the new features include “Content Blocking” which lets developers to pass a JSON file along with a set of rules for images, cookies, popups, resources and also various other elements in Safari. Though it doesn’t offer an option until an application adds the blocking functionality.
This feature will allow applications like Disconnect, which blocks tracking scripts around the Web to stay along with the iOS for the first time since it’s launch.
The company doesn’t want to give out the in-depth details about the new content blocking feature currently. Though Apple stated that it is also supported by Safari on OS X in the upcoming release of the El Capitan.
The media is still trying to figure out the reason for Apple encouraging ad blocking on the Web.
As it runs its own ad network, iAd, it may be a strategy to push websites that rely on ad revenue into building native apps instead, where it can get a cut of the advertising revenue and guarantee they’ll still appear.*
The media has asked Apple to clarify what it will allow Content Blockers to be used for. Other queries included whether it’ll accept ad blocking applications onto the App Store when iOS 9 will be available later this year.
