For quite some time now, Apple has been proudly proclaiming its iOS App Store to be the biggest one around. And the claims were right as well. With over 300,000 apps to choose from it by far leads the App Stores race by some margin. Android Market on the other hand, currently has just over 150,000 apps. However, Apple’s reign may not last long if we are to go by a report from analytics from Distimo. According to them, at the current rates of growth, the Android Market will eclipse the iOS App Store in the next five months. In fact, the firm says that the Android Market already has more free apps than the iOS market.
By June 2011, it is expected that Android Market would fall short of just 40,000 apps compared to the iOS App Store. In the next few months, it will close that gap as well. The prediction would of course only come true if all the app stores included in the study maintain their current growth rates.
In terms of growth rate too Android market is leading the pack with the iOS App Store coming in at second place. These two are followed by the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, BlackBerry App World and Nokia Ovi Store. Do you think Android will eventually go on to claim all the titles once held by iOS/Apple?
