Apple which held the record for the fastest selling phones in a week with their iPhone 4, has added another BIG feather to its cap by becoming the biggest smartphone company in the world and displacing Nokia from the top in terms of volume sales.Apple was already the best in terms of profits and revenues generated.
But now it has become the biggest smartphone producer in the world after shipping 20.3 million iPhones in the second quarter with Nokia only managing 16.7 million in the same duration. Apple had shipped 18.7 million units in the first quarter which means they sold an additional 1.6 million handsets this quarter. Whereas, Nokia had managed to ship 24.2 million units in the first quarter which means that they have effectively dropped by a staggering 7.5 million handsets this quarter.
What makes Apple’s achievement even more special is the fact that they are only selling two models i.e. the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4. Samsung’s Galaxy SII is adding heat to the competition and looks promising with it just being launched in Canada and one pending in the US. It will be interesting to see the smartphone sales result by the end of the year. Well for now it seems that Apple is all set to retain the honors by the end of the year as well.
