Arunachal Pradesh is in talks with the global giant Google to run a pilot for deploying Google’s new affordable Chromebook XOLO laptops for the state’s school system. The laptop by Google runs on the Google’s Chrome Operating System. Chromebook is designed with the intention of working on the internet with most of the data and applications residing ‘in the cloud’. This pilot project is proposed to be run in Itanagar and Ziro.
Google’s Global Product Manager Chrome OS, Smita Hashim, informed the PTI that they were in discussions with Arunachal Pradesh for giving laptops to students as a part of their focus on the education sector. He continues stating that the Google Chromebooks along with Google Apps can play an important role for education and in helping students create, learn and collaborate.
She further added that with the Chromebook Management Console, administrators will be able to manage the laptops from a computer or a phone and soon over a period of time it will help in the reduction of the school’s maintenance and software costs.
Hashim didn’t reveal any other details but informed that they were in discussions with other states for similar partnerships. Hasim also stated that Google is working on the launching of the Chromebook in the remote areas of the country where connectivity is unreliable and a major hindrance.
She continued telling that they have been working to ensure that Chromebook will work where connectivity can be ‘spotty’ and people’s first experience with technology is through a phone rather than a laptop.
Hashim also mentioned that a lot of applications like Google’s Drive and Gmail along with other apps like the VLC player are being available offline as the launch of this laptop is targeted for the educational sector.
The XOLO Chromebook will be available on Snapdeal within the next few days while the Nexian Air Chromebook will be available on Amazon. Both the devices will be listed at Rs 12,999.
The recent development by Google had been the visibility of the train routes and schedules which proves how they are always investing for the better.
