Nokia has its latest smartphone experiment out in the form of the Maemo powered N900. We call it an experiment as Nokia is still promoting N97 over this wonderful gadget. Yes I certainly believe that the N900 is the best smartphone that Nokia has produced till date and no matter what comparisions say, the N900 comes real close to beating the iPhone 3GS, in some ways it does. The same old issue with the Nokia is the weight and the usability. iPhone scores there.
N900 weighs 181gms and has a large thick structure, which isn’t the best for mobility. The good with the N900 is the strong OS + openness that the iPhone lacks, good browser and the physical qwerty (though Nokia screws up the spacebar again). One impressive thing the N900 has is the 600MHz processor and 256MB ram. This is one area where Nokia has been a miser since ages, however they give good backing to N900 which runs a desktop grade OS. Is this enough? Will the 768MB virtual memory help? Not sure, but the videos we saw looked impressive.
The camera and video recording specs of the N900 might be better but the iPhone scores with better usability and web integration. However a 32GB smartphone with a strong OS for $650 is certainly good. The N900 is IMO the best from Nokia yet, but only time will tell how well it does against the iPhone 3GS. The App Store and slick UI of the iPhone is hard to beat. But Nokia vs iPhone doesn’t end here…

Just for fun: N900 and iPhone 2G (I also tried the 3GS, even that slips in)
A few things N900 badly misses:
1. Multitouch support
2. Lack of switching between Landscape mode and portrait mode. It works only in landscape mode
3. Lack of MMS

Side-by-side lacks N900 screen resolution which is 800×480. Also, side-by-side claims that N900 has MMS messages, but it does not.
Hannu are you stupid? Nokia started adding mms in there phones way b4 ppl at apple knew what a cell phone was! . My old noka e90 would kick iphone’s ass in many ways. u shouldn’t even compare n900 with ur stupid iphone, try comparing it with ur mac.
There is no comparison between Nokia N900 and iPhone. Nokia totally beat iPhone in every way imaginable. Slick OS, multiple desktops, powerful camera, higher resoluation, extremely fast and responsive, flash mozilla displaying what websites are supposed to look like (very important). So don’t based on how well Nokia N900 did in US and view it as success because it’ll never be success like iPhone even if it’s 10X more powerful than iPhone simply because there is never a carrier that carry the phone in US. It’s always unlocked.
Finally a phone that can compete with the iPhone..great camera, nice web-browser and great ram speed as well..this is nokia’s best effort to counter the iPhone. However, they need to improve their Ovi Store..
another stupid blog from an iphone idiot. don’t brag about apple app store. more than 90% are garbage apps. nokia OS is linux debian. voice control and shit are just apps not to brag about coz they can easily be developed. hardware is the key….stick you thin iphone stupid battery in your heads.
is the stupid static homescreen the pro in usability for you ? Checking updates in facebook, mail, twitter you need to open and close all apps one after the other. That’s rubbish. On the Nokia phones a view to the live homescreen is enough -> perfect !
Shut the hell up blunt bling moron.
Well soon enouh the Palm Uon will be revolutionizing phones again

x86 CPU?! Which battery it will have?
I’m sorry to disappoint you B-Ling-B-Ling, but you have your facts all wrong about MMS and new N900.
Here’s how Nokia comments about N900’s missing MMS feature:
http://www.puhelinvertailu.com/uutiset.cfm/2009/08/31/nokian_n900_ssa_ei_tukea_mms_multimediaviesteille
Unfortunately, despite of you being undoubtedly very sophisticated fellow, there’s a slight chance you don’t understand the original Nokia language, but please don’t cut your wrists just yet. I will translate it for you.
Translated: We asked about this matter from Nokia and we got the following answer: “Maemo 5 does not support MMS or underlying WAP technology. The target user group of this device is familiar sharing high quality pictures in internet – uploading to Flickr, Facebook, Picasa, Ovi etc. – and in N900 and Maemo 5 this is what we have focused on.”
You can also find that same fact on this site’s conversation:
http://conversations.nokia.com/2009/08/27/finding-maemo-the-new-nokia-n900/
..and here:
http://maemo.nokia.com/features/camera/
Upload your high-resolution* images and videos directly to Ovi Share or Flickr, or send via email or a wireless Bluetooth connection.
* Maemo 5 does not currently support MMS or underlying WAP-technology.
So, hold on to your soon-2-b antique blingbling Nokia, if you cannot survive without MMS.
Lookwise my vote will go to Nokia N900, I mean its really breathtaking
Does the n900 seriously have a resistive touchscreen or is that a mistake. If that’s the case, you can have it.
When is n900 coming to India?? And do you have any idea of its pricing in India
@Rob The touch-screen is similar to 5800 and n97 but with better receptivity..
just cus its got reisitive just does not mean its not sensitive infact its very senstive to the tip of your finger
Wow.. see? you see this mms thing right here? this is why i refuse to pre order anything. u dont find out all the extra lil things that leave u salty until the “beta testers” as I have heard some one call them work out all the lil kinks.. nokia n95/NAM 8gb? smmfh. its sad cause they hit u with a super phone like this and some stuff u just assume would be standard with it ya know? like.. how the hell do u have such a awesome camera and then limit the phones ability to do with it as u want? its like… the phone is being snoby to other less sophisticated phones lmfao like it dont wanna communicate with them like that lol. i know its a awesoem phone but really. 80%of my pciture phone pics end up sent to some one via mms. smh nokia got me pissed with this one. what will we find out next huh .. maybe the phone only rings (1.5 seconds) once when some one calls? what other simple no brainer features have nokia left out of this one?
this phone is great for me and i never really use mms waste of time when u can send over the net
amazing!!
nokia 900 n0w is in my dream……
Seriously….
written by a true fanboy.
Leave the N900 alone untill fully tested. Spouting al you jibberish.
“The camera and video recording specs of the N900 might be better but the iPhone scores with better usability and web integration.”
Are you serious about the web integration SERIOUSLY!!!
hahaha you funny man.
This Phone does have mms. question about web intergration.. can u view multiple web sites on new i phone or multi task? just curious.
Many of the comments about how 90% of apps are useless from app store. I think these people are missing one point. People have to go back to 80s when PC was launched. 90% of apps were terms as “games” or “toys” and never believed that they would threat dominance of mainframe and minis in commercial world. We have more than 25 years of learning behind us now. If there is one thing that app store has, it is that people like you and me are behind them. And not apple. The same people who were after IBM PC.
A brick by any other name is still a brick.
OMGGG!!! What are you guy on? I think you should change your dealer, because he’s making you all trip-out. First of all, it’s a LINUX OP, so atm, they cannot have MMS, because they still have to code it all, so that i’s compatible. There will most likely be a firmware update once its released. This phone is a machine, also for portrait, there will be all kind of thirdparty apps that will enable to do everything that’s missing. I guarantee you all, this phone is the only part of progress and future evolution for telephone/smartphone devices. Everyone asks and awaits too much now a days. FFS… its already a WONDER that people can pick up a small thing like a phone and call someone on the other side of the world! So be glad, there’s devices like this, and give maemo 5 a chance to breathe :/ it’s still in progress. Like everything else, it gets updated.
No, who said N900 can’t chage from Landscape to Portrait mode? it can
@Karan as far as i heard, it cant!
I spoke to nokia usa today and they told me this phone is now capable of MMS. I hope this one knew what she was talking about
Some iphonies claim they can multitask,
running a couple of apps is not multitasking it’s maybe minitasking. I’m talking about downloading a divx dvdrip to watch later without any convertion, while listening to Jabber(internet radio) and playing a game, then you pause your game because your friend send you a IM or Emails, he want you to check out this funny video on the web, so you open you web browser and right before the funny part of the video your girlfriend call so you answer, it turn out she is free for the rest of the day, so you open your contact make a couple of reservations, and voila you go back to seeing the funny part right were you left off.
Do you know why you can’t multitasking?
Well allow me to illustrate you why, it’s simple we are in the midst of a new decade where your hardware and OS will be outdated, no longer fit to compete with the next generation of smartphones. and no matter how jailedbroken your iphony is, it’s hardware will just trembles by the mere thought of true multitasking.
The N900 can change from landscape to portrait mode on a per application basis. The hardware is there, but developers of each application needs to support it. As stated by Nokia – developers can make portrait mode applications if they see a use for it. Nokia on the other hand, says the device is ment to be used in landscape mode so the applications made inhouse reflects this point of view.
why so about i phone because it is an american brand not a eroupean brand and look at silly i phone does not comes with an gr8 camera and yu can play stupid kids game not a high end games as in ngage and nor u cannot install amazing s60 apps so that is why i left my idea to get an iphone and hold a n900
I love how people start insulting each other for two phones, and claiming they have the absolute conclusion of what phone is the best phone for every user, saying things like “N900 is better than iPhone 3GS in every way” because while its true that it has many features better than the iPhone, I just want to remind you two things:
iPhone 3Gs is an iPod: Yes, like it or not, iPod is the standard in portable audio, and every new audio device from a certain price point has an iPod interface, from an Alarm Clock to a 6000 USD high end audio receiver/amplifier.
iPhone 3Gs has an big App Store: While some might say that the 90% of the apps in the App Store are crap, remember that the App Store has over 100,000 apps available right now, so the 10% of 100,000 is 10,000 cool apps.
While the Nokia N900 has several better and important features that are better than the similar ones in the iPhone, like a better camera, more processing power, more storage flexibility, an Linux Based OS, a screen with better resolution, etc etc, its not necesariy better in every way, you should be the one deciding which one is the best for you, not which one is the best for everyone, at least not until Nokia releases the Morph.
And please stop the flamming, because everytime you flame, a puppy dies…. somewhere…
keep in mind that n900 is a internet tablet that happens to make and receive calls..
resistive touchscreen is better than capacitive capacitive is more responsive but practically resistive is better for accuracy u can not use ur fingers in every applications and games but in resistive u can use stylus which can be use for handwriting recognition and many more applications and games
lets say nokia beats iphone in everyway … u knw something.within 3 months iphone reached 20 millions sold ..then y ppl looks for iphone anyway ha..dudes iphone is iphone nothing can compare in future also they’ll make more comport to use …Always # 1
n900 is a computer. You don’t compare a computer to a phone.
I don’t see how iphone can have better web integration when you can’t even add an attachment to an email, since you have no access to the file system.
Whereas the n900 can load up facebook as if you’re using a PC and upload pics and vids through the web interface without needing any apps.
hey guys…. i was having the iphone 3g till today when i bought my new mobile nokia n900 and it fukd iphone nd tmrw im gna sell da fkn iphone cuz it sulks compared to da new nokia so iphone supporters go fk ur selfs
I see others already made my point. N900 is a computer, just like my Mac and of course much better than any wincrap machine. iPhone (and Droid) are just smart phones.
Now, the main reason why the iPhone does not work like a computer is the stupid “sandboxing”. Is it enough to jailbreak it to get around it?
I guess N900 still wins, but you will be comparing two computers.
Please comment…
Hey every one just to give you an update so its no speculation on the n90. I just brought mines for my birthday on thanks giving so i been using it for a few weeks now. the camera sucks (sorry to be the bearer of bad news) Nit is no where near as good as the n95 which is funny cause I think they haev the same lense.
also.. the speakers suck .. maybe i am just spoiled cause my last phone was the n95 which had awesome loud boss speakers.
Also… it didnt come with the option to send blue tooth files. I did how ever find a app for it at maemo.org. its called petrovitch and it works very veyr veyr well. anyone who gets this phone needs to become very familiar with that site. it is my cell phone bible right now.
ALso.. it does not have mms capability but the folks at maemo.org are already working that lil issue diligently. u can even check the site to find out the latest news on mms for the n900. I dont know what nokia is doing right now in terms of updating but who cares. when you have places like maemo.org it doesnt matter they are really making it so u get the best out of this phone.
Multitasking is amazing with this phone. words cant describe it. u really have to see it to believe it.
the web browser hangs some times (its not a big deal though. doesnt happen often and usually it loads up fast) and you have to tap the screen to kinda wake it the hell up but its a bug thats being worked on as we speak
bottom lin eis this is the best phone i have ever had inspite of the few quirks and bugs. i think they dropped the ball with the speakers and the camera and honestly it may be on par with the iphone in that area. but thats were the comparison stops. the iphone is not even in the same league as this thing u gotta get one for your self
not everything has to be an iphone killer
I now have both the iPhone 3GS and nokia N900 devices in my possesion. At first sight, the overall looks: N900 wins. t may be heavy but it won’t slip out of your pocket that easy as the iPhone, and it still slips into your pocket fairly easy. About the MMS: iPhone doesn’t have MMS support, neither does N900. As the N900 has a new OS theres a great chance Nokia will include this feature into it soon, with the next firmware updates. Apple won’t do it. Clear. The camera: Ofcourse the N900 wins. Web browsing: N900 wins, it is in first instance an internet tablet anyway. The iPhone doesn’t support full flash. (You can get flash with it being jailbroken, but it isn’t fully supported). Messaging: iPhone wins. There is no IM software yet on the N900, but it’s under development. Bluetooth: N900 ofcourse. Touchscreen: iPhone, capacitive touchscreen is quite better than resistive, it’s a fact. Multimedia: N900 wins, way more file types are supported, and it has a standard file manager, it’s possible on the iPhone 3GS too, but it’s limited since you can’t delete songs, because iTunes converts them into alien names. Third party apps: So far the iPhone is the winner here, but that will soon change, since Ovi store will be more laxiste than the App store. Speed: I’d say equal. Games: iPhone is the winner, since it has multitouch support(btw for all you ignorant people out there, the reason why Nokia doesn’t support multitouch on their devices is because Apple simply has a patent on it, which means they can sue Nokia if they use multitouch too). Multitasking: N900 wins, it’s way easier to multitask than the iPhone 3GS( I’m talking about jailbroken ones ). Overall winner: I prefer the N900, because it has more average day utilities available. I don’t need a Compass, I need bluetooth. Plus, it will soon get new apps, new games, new themes, support for landscape mode, which means, this is going to be one of the best smartphones on the market. (Yes nokia, I did it, I called it a smartphone)
I think that both phones have good sides. Iphone is better on some & nokia other.
Web surfing is more comfortable on iphone. Multitasking is better on nokia.
UI is better on iphone, nokias s60 is like cavemans old technology. Nokia should use at least windows.
@m79 the nokia n900 does have a new ui, its called maemo 5. Thats one of the main selling points of this phone. How could you miss that? Please, for your sake, get your facts strait before you comment. And as far as web browsing goes, the nokia n900 is vastly superior to the iphone’s (from what i can tell, as I have neither).
can some one help me out,
If i buy 3gs frm apple, and give the address of Aramex(shipping agent), and ask them to send it to me (middle east), will dere be any problem??I am not even going use the sim card that they’ll provide, so will that be helpful…………..
But what abt the 2 year agreement, i am not sure abt that…plz help!
It is way cheaper dere, over here it rnd 700 dollars..
The only phone that will better the iphone is the next iphone simply because no other phone is as easy to use or configured so smoothly ive tried out every other touch screen phone and none come close despite these comparison sites. Yes i agree the Nokia has a better camera and is online capable but Apple products are so user friendly even their computers kick the ass off every others even their laptops with 2gs of RAM are still better and faster that sonys and Dells with 4gs of RAM and same CPU speeds, this transfers though all Apples products! Iphone no contest!
Also with some many different apps your iphone pretty much transforms into anything.. compass, music tuner, GPS, games machine, language teacher the list is endless ..can’t be touched!
@Jan: Iphone OS3.0 has MMS support.
I agree with Jan 98%.. two things. when you made that post the n900 did haev support for instant messaging. gmail was already integrated into the sms app. all u have to do is set up the account. also available at that time were applications to use yahoo, aol, and a host of others the same way as with gmail. I don’ tknow that i can agree with no one else being able to use multi toch because apple has a patent on it. that tech was not created by apple. and anyone can write softwear for it (the way i understand it) i could be wrong. anyway… http://www.fastcompany.com/news/2008/10/31-apple-patent-bilski-case.html
What a terrible review! Pretty obvious to see where your loyalties lie. Just to let consumers know the iphone has NO video calling, NO Linux OS so not even comparable for hacking, NO front camera, ONLY 3mp camera, NO lense cover, NO qwerty keyboard, NO expansion slot, ONLY 1 desktop,, SMALLER battery, SMALLER screen, SMALLER resolution, resistive screen so CAN’T use a stylus, NO Flash, Less file types supported, NO Mozilla, WAY WORSE web intergration, NO FM transmitter. The iphone is a smartphone while the N900 is a Computer – there is a HUGE difference. Funny you didn’t mention iphone has NO MMS too! AND both MMS & portrait mode has been confirmed for the N900 via update. The iphone is smaller, lighter and has a better app store (because it’s been out years longer). THAT’S IT. You Apple Fanboys really have to start looking at the FACTS. But don’t worry here comes the next trend from Apple. The iPad! That’s not gona bomb at all. LOL! Sounds like a Tampon.
ive been playing with iphone 3gs and u cant compare 2. iphone will never have as many apps as nokia. and the n900 can run web cam in msn. play any videos online. iphone cant do this. meamo 6 due come out with loads more apps.wot the f***k has iphone got. nokia has left iphone in the past. its a fashion statement now. as well the iphone is 4 kids. get the n900 a mans phone unlock the real power.
Plz do let me know the price of Nokia N900 in UAE Dirhams and aslo if u can-plz do let me know that whether it is availble in UAE DUTY FREE SHOPS @Terminal 3,as i am traveeling frm LIBYA.
hope when compared with NOKIA N97……NOKIA N900 wil be the best…plz Quote u’r valuable comments for this dears.
I agree the N900 is a better phone then the iPhone.
The Nokia n900 is a grat phone. It has some many advanced feature compated to the iPhone. the iPhone is really dead and barried by the sifistication of the Nokia N900 device.
As i know that every Device has a gud and bad points but trust me nokia iz the best, there is no any limited boudry to move forwad, its unlimited i’m sure that nokia users being effected, iphone needs the $ for simple applicatin but nokia its free and its unlimited! For nokia users i dont think so i’ve to explain abt nokia, the rest people remind it neither u’ll b in illusion! Blve me or not doesn’t matter! Nokia is the best thanks nokia!
i agree too, overall n900 wins. i used 3gs b4, the iphone when using it is just like having locked in the jail, the world is so small(tat’s y they call it “jailbreak”) n for n900 it is just a big world, n900 is just like a living thing, it grows. everytime u install an app it grows better
MMS is failed feature .. SO I dont care where MMS is supported or not. and even if u want , u can install fMMS to recieve/send MMS . But personally i left MMSing 4 years back…
