iPhone 3G Power Adapters (Charger) faulty; Apple Recalls Millions

Apple has recalled millions of iPhone 3G power adapters that were sold along with the handsets since Mid july. Apparently the Power adapters have a safety hazard that can potentially lead to accidents. However in its official release Apple has clarified that no injuries have been reported so far.

Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter’s metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock.

The official exchange shall began from October 10, users have been requested to use their usb cable to charge their iPhones till they receive a replacement for their Power Charger. The new power chargers that are considered to be SAFE, are marked with a Single Green Dot (See image above).

How to exchange your faulty iPhone 3G adapters:

  • Order a replacement adapter via the web. These replacement adapters will ship within three weeks of your order, starting on Friday, October 10.
  • Exchange your adapter at an Apple Retail Store starting on October 10.

We’ll need to collect your iPhone 3G’s serial number as part of the exchange process.
If you apply via the web, you will also need to provide your name and address so that we can send you a new adapter along with a shipment box so that you can return the affected adapter to Apple. [Apple Notification]

Apple iPhone 3G has outsold the iPhone 1st Gen in sales, and it is estimated that over 6 million pcs have been sold in this region. No details on who shall bear the cost of replacement (Apple or OEM) was available.
