AT&T gears up for iPhone 3G vs Palm PRE

Till the 2009 version of the Apple iPhone – powered with OS 3.0 is released, AT&T has only the iPhone 3G to fight off the Palm PRE and the Nokia N97. A leaked internal memo from AT&T reveals companies plan to counter the Palm Pre launch. While there isn’t any reason for Apple or AT&T to panic, it seems that ATT wants to make sure that no one takes away the mindshare that iPhone hold at the moment.

In US, AT&T is the only carrier selling iPhones and it has got millions of subscribers taking up premium plans with AT&T. For AT&T iPhone is a big deal, at the same time any worthy competitor to the iPhone is a gold mine for a rival. Sprint has got it in the form of Palm’s new webOS powered Pre. The showdown begins.

On expected lines, the defense by AT&T (or rather offense) is on the lines of no Touchscreen/UI charm, design, CDMA limitation of PRE and the App Store advantage. Here, are the points on which AT&T is fighting off the Sprint Palm Pre.

  • The Palm Pre “Touchscreen control gestures not intuitive” whereas the iPhone features “Patented Multi-Touch screen” and “Fast and responsive navigation.”
  • The iPhone sports a  “Thinner, lighter, bigger screen, metal and glass design” while the Pre is “Available in Black only; plastic casing.”
  • The Pre gets knocked for not being a GSM world phone and “Limited free Wi-Fi access” because they don’t get to use AT&T Hotpots.
  • The Pre has an “Unproven App Catalog app store.”
