Making its presence felt during the mobile hungma of MWC 2010 (note: Nokia skipped MWC and does its own private press meets in Barcelona), Nokia has announced that its maps offering has surpassed 3 million downloads in close to 20 days. Bringing free turn by turn GPS with a lot more goodness, the Ovi Maps navigation, is sure a sweet service.
After paying over $8 billion for Navteq mapping, Nokia sure deserves this traction for its Free Ovi Maps navigation that it launched in January. Given the fact that this service as of now is yet to support all Nokia handsets that the company plans to integrate the 1 download per second is impressive. GPS navigation softwares offered on iPhone costed in the range of $99 and ever since Google released the beta of its Navigation app on Android the competition in this space heated up. However, Nokia has uped the scale with more countries, more features and wider compatibility.
The best part of Nokia Maps is that it does not require an active internet connection to work, unlike the Google offering. And of course being free it certainly becomes the first choice for many :). Way to go Nokia, hope Steve Jobs works on his own Maps offering fast enough or allows Google to bring the goodness to iPhone asap!
