iPhone 4: Is Glassgate Real? Squaretrade throws some stats comparing 3GS

Just recently there was a great controversy on another iPhone 4 design flaw that made people wonder if Apple is battling with another crucial design issue after the infamous Antennagate case. As it seems the world has moved on and the media is done talking about the antennagate issue. So why not create a glassgate? A weird, complex and far stretched rumor that factors iPhone case designs as its biggest pointer to the issue. The only thing I have to say on weak glass design of the iPhone 4 is the fact that Gorilla Glass that even the Nokia N8 uses is really tough (have seen it in action myself and videos aswell) and I fail to believe that after working on it to make it better, Apple would fail.

Well add to this whole glass gate issue here are some stats from Square trade. As it seems the iPhone 3GS breakdowns had 76% cracked screens and iPhone 4 has 82% and a issue is being made out of it.
iPhone 4 Glass body, breaks?

Well firstly its a 6pt rise in screen breakage counting both the front and back glass of the iPhone 4. So if you broke the plastic back of the 3GS, it wouldn’t have counted in the 76% you see above. A very simple math! To me its more or less than same ratio as the iPhone 3GS with Square trade itself saying that 25% of the reported issues are with the back glass and not display. Factor this and the ration would go below 76% for broken display. Now that certainly is better than the 3GS, isn’t it?

There are other stats like total no of breakdowns in display in 4 months, but then a sample size of 20000 isn’t what I would like to look at. Specially when it comes from a insurance provider.

PS: Its only today that I figured out that the iPhone 4 has a 1420 mAh battery.
