Google Nexus S Arrives. Runs Gingerbread

It had been leaked and seen in blurry videos for quite some time now. Vehemently denied earlier by Google of its existence, the Nexus S was an open secret. Everyone knew it was “coming soon” and that it is the successor to Google’s Nexus One- released earlier in 2010. Anyway, the phone has been made official now. Unlike the Nexus One- which was made by HTC, the Nexus S is a Samsung product deep inside and boasts of the 1Ghz Hummingbird processor amongst other hardware that does make it stand out from the rest

The Nexus S runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is the first phone to run the latest version of the OS. Like the Nexus One, the Nexus S is sort of a reference phone that will get all Android updates much before other devices get the new updates. Notable features of the Nexus S includes a 4 inch “Contour” display – a unique curved display that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. It also boasts of luminance rating that is up to 1.5x higher than conventional LCD displays. Of course, it is AMOLED in nature. The resolution remains similar to existing high-end Android phones – 480*800.

Other features include a 5 megapixel camera and support for 720p, HD video recording. The phone supports Wi-Fi b/g/n, Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700 HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps) and bluetooth. The phone also gets 16 GB of onboard memory which unfortunately doesn’t eem to be expandable in nature.

The phone, like its predecessor would be available as an unlocked, SIM Free device in the US. Consumers in the US can however get the phone from December 16th at $199 from T-Mobile and $529 unlocked. The UK launch is expected to happen on December 20. The Nexus S offers 6.7 hours of talk time on 3G and 14 hours on 2G networks. The 1500 mAH battery also offers it a standby time of 17.8 days on 3G and 29.7 days on 2G.

Like we said earlier, the Nexus S is a phone with contemporary features and is quite comparable to the existing set of high end devices from other manufacturers. The only advantage of this device is the likelihood of Android updates arriving earlier on this phone – compared to the others.

Now, only if this one arrives in India – officially.
