As per a latest research report on carried by the analysis firm Nielsen, Android has managed to capture 56% market share among the newly bought smartphones in the last three months. Nielsen carried out the research by surveying more than 25,500 people who bought new smartphones between the months of June to August.
Though Android has gone up at 56%, Apple sits steady at 28%. Its interesting to note that Android’s growth has been at the expense of mostly RIM which was at a meager 9% (down from 18%) and Symbian (which accounts for just 6% including other platforms like Bada, Windows Phone 7 etc.). When its comes to Apple, their latest handset iPhone 5 is about to be launched and its a taken that it would certainly boost the sales and the market share of Apple. Though it would be interesting to see by how much.
RIM has been losing its market share all these months and this report by Nielsen just about underlines the fact. Though we must add that latest Blackberry handsets which were received appreciation in the market were launched only after the survey and thus are not a part of Nielsen’s report which otherwise could have translated to marginal increase in RIM’s share. We also do not expect this report to give global figures, Blackberry’s growth in the Indian sub-continent has been spectacular.
Its interesting to note how Google’s Android platform has increasingly dominated the smartphone market and we are not at all surprised as we ourselves predicted Android’s domination way back in April last year. And Android’s growth will only keep heading Northwards until a clear third OS challenger stands up in the market, which for now is most likely to be Windows Phone 7.
