Samsung Galaxy SII Sells 10 Million, Competition For iPhone 5?

Samsung has kept the tempo up with its Galaxy SII smartphone running Android. Sales figures were coming in strong right from the pre-order days and that without even a proper launch in US. As of today, Samsung claims that it has sold as many as 10 million Samsung Galaxy SII smartphones.

And this is an even more amazing achievement considering the fact that Samsung had sold only 5 million till July and the other 5 million has been achieved in a matter of 8 weeks. Though these numbers are channel sales and not actual sales, this is pretty much the way sales numbers are measured in the this industry including Apple which uses the same stick for measuring the sales of its iPhones.

Samsung Galaxy SII was launched in April 2011 and it took almost 4 months for the handset to rake in its first 5 million sales while the device wasn’t event in launched in all the markets. Now with the device being launched in the US with AT&T and Sprint they have managed to achieve the feat in just about 2 months.

While Apple and Samsung are fighting it out in courts across the world, the competition is intense between iPhone and Android smartphones. Apple is widely believed to be preparing two new iPhones to counter Android’s growth and the rumors on iPhone 5 launch date is the hottest at the moment. Samsung Galaxy SII took the title of worlds best smartphone from the iPhone 4 recently and even though Apple manages to sell 20 million+ iPhones a quarter, the momentum is shifting towards Samsung’s Galaxy series.
With the Samsung Galaxy SII launching across US and the increasing popularity / sales of the handset, are the prospects for iPhone 5 in danger?
A lot will depend on the new strategy that Apple unveils with its new products and software. One can easily guess that iPhone 5 will be an instant hit, but if Apple launches a cheaper version, iPhone 4s i.e. it will certainly add to Apple’s ammunition and help them target a wider audience in Asia and other markets as well. With the rumored launch just around the corner we are eagerly waiting.
