White House Responds To Ban On Cell Phone Unlocking By Extending Its Support Against The Ban

After DMCA reinstated the ban on cell phone unlocking on January 26th 2013 there were many opinions given out in support of reversing the decision and a petition filed on the white house website asking the government to respond on this issue and take up the case of unbanning cell phone unlocking. The petition had to get at least 100000 signs in a period of one month which it actually did! Yesterday, White House officially gave out a statement in support of the cause. In a full response given out by R. David Edelman, Senior Advisor for Internet, Innovation, & Privacy, he said that the white house gathered experts across the government working in fields of telecommunications, copyrights and technology to conclude on the issue. David Edelman said that “The White House agrees with the 114,000+ of you who believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones without risking criminal or other penalties. In fact, we believe the same principle should also apply to tablets, which are increasingly similar to smart phones

David Edelman said that if users have paid for their mobile device, and aren’t bound by a service agreement or other obligation, they should be able to use it on another network. It is a protection of consumer choice and also ensures competitive wireless market that delivers innovative products and solid service to meet consumers’ needs.
